Worth mentioning that while I agree with Mariella, you have to remember that just as 'race' as a concept is culturally constructed and not biologically based, so the idea of 'racism' is subjective to some extent and defined slightly differently depending on the culture you come from. As a half-Italian who has lived in the UK and the US, I can tell you that most Italians have a slightly *ahem* different notion of what constitutes racism as is held in the American mainstream (obviously the attitude of certain quarters/individuals in the US is a different matter). To be clear, I'm not saying Italians are racist, just that "racism" as a term has different connotations in a largely white southern european country to what it has in a nation with a recent history of slavery, segregation, and then a Civil Rights movement.
Anyway, this is seriously threatening the 'no politics' rule so I think a better point of discussion is whether the punishment is correct. I absolutely think that punishment for racist chants (or indeed, xenophobic/nationalist ones if they happened to be present) is necessary, but individual stadium bans would be more effective than curva closure, which acts to solidify the 'us vs. them', real fans vs. corporate/federation arseholes mentality while also negatively impacting on the atmosphere for players and other supporters.
