There were some really great stats to take from the Genoa game, like the fact that they didn't have one shot on target all game. Another positive is that we were able to generate 20 shots during the match, only out-done by Cagliari who had 22 shots overall in their game against Bologna. So yeah, defensively we were strong, and we were creating shooting chances.

However, there is a huge problem in attack. It is not so much that we are lacking passing accuracy in the final third, it's in the final 18 yards is where our passing accuracy goes to shit. In the diagram below you'll be able to see where the vast majority of our possession is wasted:

I feel like if we want to be title contenders we need to be a lot more direct around the box. I found it very lackadaisical at times when players passed straight to a Genoa defender, even at 0-0. So I think Mazzarri needs to tighten up the passing and the general play in the opposition box, especially against Juventus, were every goal scoring opportunity must be taken.

A few more interesting stats:
> Mazzarri has only beaten Catania once, back in 2007 with Reggina.
> Inter have scored in each of their last 15 meeting with Catania. (37 in total)
> Catania have beaten Inter 5 times, all of which have been at home.

Which is why a new DM like Nainggolan is key for us. We don't need a pure destroyer, but a ball playing midfielder who can sit on top of the defense can help our team a lot... someone like a young Cambiasso.

What does that even mean?

Taider is a ball playing midfielder, so he can play as the DM instead of 'young Cambiasso'. Or he can't, do you know these players before commenting? Who the fuck believes Nainggolan is a DM?

So essentially we all agree that Cambiasso has had his time in the limelight and he needs to move over for someone else and be a sub/mentor to the younger guys. Good.

Whoa whoa whoa.. Let's just finish in the top half of the table first, then we'll worry about where. Title contenders is something we can talk about in another season or two. Right now, I just don't want to be humiliated by every team left, right and center.

Would I sell him? No, I don't think we can find an suitable replacement.

I had a chance to watch one or two Tottanham games, Brasil on confederation cup and man ... Paulinho is the king, facking beast, smart, technical midlefielder with excepcional stamina. Guarin with a brain.

Edit:

My point is that Guarin needs to turn his brain on or we need to find a replacment who have exactly the same caractheristics with smarter head.

Dunno about Brasilian league, but Paulinho in Spurs has had shit start. Far from showing his smart movement.

He is beast in his NT tho.

We are used to have a pure destroyer just because we have always been a defensive minded team. Our games relied on players who could defend the final score. But, these last years everything has changed. We can't find our identity anymore, and our games lack composure. There is no balance, whatsoever, even with a destroyer. I hope Mazzarri makes us a solid, modern side that can play a game with keeping the possession. I don't know about you, but i've always liked to see my team be dominant and secure at the same time.

In our game againts Genoa one of our scoring issues in the first half was Palacio who couldn't break through until Icardi was introduced to lift some of the pressure of him and Alvarez as well. That all revolves not on the distirbution of our forwards but becasue on the absence of Cambiasso and Kuzmanovic from doing their jobs which I belive was evident when Kovacic entered the game and Guarin's mature preformance.

I'm not sure with mentality Mazzarri wants to start the Catania match before the Juve game, but I hope he can by then balance our boys main roles

In that case we wouldn't have matches like this though ....:epicwin:

Cuchu doesn't really do anything out there. Mazzarri seems to be trying to turn him into a Pirlo-like regista from what I've seen of the preseason and the Genoa game. And that's just all sorts of wrong quite honestly. Mudingayi would be a better solution if it absolutely came down to 'protecting the defense'

As it is, I'm in the camp of having an athletic and youthful midfield of Taider, Kovacic and Guarin.

That's what I have been saying!

Mazzari is trying t o turn Cmbiasso into a Pirlo type player. He doesn't o anything, he just sit in front of the defense and sends long balls to attack.

I agree with a midfield of Taider, Kova and Guarin.

I thank God we didn't get Paulinho, very overrated.

Which one of our strikers can play as a second striker? As one who can collect and pass more deeply?

Belfodil? Icardi? Palacio?

Apparently we're going to play Alvarez as a SS according to GdS. I don't understand why we're not playing with two strikers, nor do I understand why Belfodil has seemingly fallen so far from grace.

Probably just needs to get used to the system and the EPL. To be honest I'm not worried about him, I think he will perform well.

It's a great post so thanks. It's worth noting that all teams have a far poorer pass completion rate in the final 18 yards. Possession is turned over most in the zone around the edge of the penalty box. This is consistent with what you might expect. Defences become tighter and more aggressive here and so passes become riskier. You can't just walk through the centre of a top division club's defence.

its still early to play Belsomething and Icardi together. maybe we should start playing them after a comfy lead, in the second half 20 minutes max, just to see their effect on the opponent.

and when you guys try to somehow convince yourselves that Insignie didnt play alot, maybe you should check the minutes he got last season.

anyway, back on topic, i think its ridiculous for our starting eleven to be without Alvarez, he has been a machine for us, it will be stupid to bench our most valuable player.

i hope some miracle happens and we get rid of pereira and gagatomo :D
