Going elsewhere in January means risking a Fernando Torres/Chelsea situation, in which he's introduced in a new team in the middle of a tournment, doesn't gel in soon enough and becomes a shadow of his former self. He won't do it, if not out of loyalty (we should all take player's loyalties with a pinch of salt), out of not being a fool.

Players / Agents sometimes ask for them for leverage if they want to leave in the future, so club is forced to comply if they want to keep the player.

I remember Real & Barca putting them as crazy numbers to signal that these players are untransferable and not worth negotiating for because if a club approaches and sees these crazy numbers they would leave right away...that was a while back before now obviously.
