Suning take all of Inter?

Inter’s owners Suning Group are reportedly ready to buy out the remaining shares of President Erick Thohir.

The Indonesian businessman bought the Nerazzurri from Massimo Moratti, taking around 70 per cent of the shares and leaving the Italian with the rest.

In the summer of 2016 Chinese conglomerate Suning came in, with Thohir buying out Moratti’s shares and selling the rest to Jindong Zhang and family.

Now Corriere dello Sport is reporting that the group is ready to buy Thohir’s remaining 31.05 per cent, taking almost total control of the club.

There would still be several small shareholders, but their stake combined amounts to just 0.4 per cent.

Thohir has already sold his shares in Major League Soccer side DC United, suggesting that he may be looking to make an exit from football investment.

Following the investments in the transfer market, it makes sense for Suning to take over.

Thohir was smart enough to buy cheap and sell expensive, so great piece of business for him. I guess he will either ca$h in or take equivalent of Suning shares.

Inter, Thohir: “I had 5 main objectives to achieve with the club”

Despite only being a minority shareholder, Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir remains the Chairman of Inter Milan. Speaking to Lapresse, Thohir spoke on several topics; including revealing his 5 primary objectives with Inter Milan and thoughts on Serie A in general.

ON SERIE A: “A white night awaits me, there is my Inter's debut against Sassuolo ... But why does not Serie A adopt the same schedule as the Premier League? We Asians are penalized, we read at 3 o'clock half in the morning.”

ON INTER: “I'm still the president of the company and I have 31% of the shares, and most of all I'm a passionate fan just to see my office: it's full of Inter shirts starting with Bergomi and Zanetti.”

ON OBJECTIVES: “Business is business, and when I bought the company from Moratti, I never fooled anyone, I never promised the Scudetto right away ... At a certain point I had to protect myself. 5 objectives: to build up infrastructures that are up to the situation, reorganize the management, set up a strong team little by little, and then buy the stars, respect financial fair play, go to the Europa League and, within 5 years, return to the Champions League.”

ON THE STADIUM: “The stadium could not be built, it would have generated business, the turnover would have increased, the turnover allowing it to keep pace with the great clubs of Europe, take Juventus as an example, which Cristiano Ronaldo was able to allow. Anyway, it seems to me that Suning has the same goal. The stadium, I mean.”

ON SELLING TO SUNING: “I sold Because there were those who offered to become a majority partner, with great goals ... I thought: all right ... I repeat: I only protected myself, I kept the charge, the place at the stadium, 31% of the shares, I am writing to my Italian and Inter friends, now it's up to Suning.”

I guess it depends on who reports it, as Suning is negociating with Thohir and he is not rushing to sell. Thohir is in a comfortable position now, as he has to do nothing while the club`s value is continuously increasing thanks to the work done by Suning.

Erick Thohir’s exit from Inter may not happen until June next year at the very latest according to a report from Il Sole 24 Ore.

The Inter president, who holds a 30% stake in the club, reached an agreement with majority shareholders Suning upon their takeover in 2016 that gives him a leaving option, something he can trigger between January and June 2019.

The main reason behind him not wanting to leave any earlier is because of the dispute over what he will receive for giving up his remaining shares to the Chinese conglomerate, who will acquire total control in the Nerazzurri once a deal is struck.

Thohir is wanting a cash fee for his shares in the club whereas Suning are hoping to strike a deal on the basis of the Indonesian tycoon receiving a small amount of shares in their company instead and that offer is believe to in fact already be on the table.

Is Erick Thohir really selling his 30% of Inter to Suning? In reality, according to Sole 24 Ore, the Indonesian tycoon has a “put” option (signed in 2016) which he should exercise within the first six months of next year.

The reason for this dispute is the settlement of the fee by the Zhang family. In fact, ET prefers a cash settlement but the proposal on the table provides the sale of a very small percentage of shares from Suning (ET would be a shareholder at Suning) to Thohir in exchange for 30% of Inter.

Thohir resists Inter exit

Erick Thohir is still the President of Inter and insists he won’t sell his 30 per cent of the club “until the time is right.”

He bought out the club from Massimo Moratti in 2013 and sold 68.55 per cent to Chinese conglomerate Suning Group in June 2016.

Despite not being particularly involved in the decision-making process, Thohir is still technically the President of Inter.

“Selling my shares is a business decision and we, as businessmen, always want to wait for the right moment to walk away,” Thohir told IDN Times.

“Don’t forget that I am till the President of the club, even if I am only a minority shareholder.”

According to Tuttosport, Thohir is eager to maintain the prestige of being Inter President, especially after they qualified for the Champions League.

He is branching out into politics, as yesterday he was appointed campaign manger to re-elect Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

Suning, on the other hand, would prefer to complete the takeover and install either Steven Zhang or current Vice-President Javier Zanetti.

I think the major problem he has with those Suning shares is that he cannot really make use of the money if he sells it. It sort of stays in China with a very limited amount of export allowance, right?
