10 years of FIF
I do not subscribe to the view that we have had an easy draw. As soon as we start arguing along those lines, we devalue the achievements of our team. It takes away from what to date, has been a very unexpected run and string of results.
It is well established that if we had been asked on the evening of the Champions League draw whether we would be happy with reaching the semi-finals, given the group we were in, the answer would have been a unanimous yes. The draw and the teams that we have encountered are totally out of our control.
In previous years (Under Conte) we were drawn in difficult groups and never made it to the second round of the competition. Today, with a far less talented team in terms of playing personnel, we are in the semi-finals of the competition. When you think about how there was minimal investment from Suning over the Summer and the club's transfer policy focusing on veteran free agents, it makes our run all the more remarkable.
In relation to Inzaghi, I was one of the posters calling for his sacking. Even today, I have not been able to get over the weak way in which we capitualted and conceded the Scudetto to Milan last year. And I am at a total loss at how we started this season and were out of the race for the Scudetto after two months. Even with the absences of Brozovic and Lukaku, that should not have happened.
I still think questions need to be asked about the first two months of the season and why our form has been so up and down and irregular. Having said that, I think Inzaghi's efforts on the back end of this season need to be acknowledged. We all know he has been on the brink of losing his job given the way the team has played in Serie A.
Somehow, he has managed to pull everyone together for this final stretch of the season and I guess I have been asking why it took so long. Perhaps it is down to to the fact that we simply can not fight on three fronts due to lack of squad depth and therefore had to pick the competitions/cups in which we would give everything to be a protagonist.
If we finish top 4, win the Coppa and make the Champions League final, I will be more than satisfied with our season. Inzaghi has my backing and I do not think we will find a better coach nor will we be able to afford a rebuild under a new tactician.
Let's enjoy the ride! Love you guys!
