Based on form? Kroos? Bellingham? KDB? I hate to pick on kids but Pedro and Musiala have shown consistency at the highest level last 2-3 seasons. FDJ is definitely world class just needs the right tactical set up to thrive.

..... doesn't have Kroos level passing range, Modric level playmaking, Kimmich level versatility, KDB level shooting, Rodri level solidity, FDJ level ball carrying, Kovacic level press resistance, Pedri level dribbling, Rice level tackling....
Kroos doesn't have his work rate, Modric doesn't have his level solidity, Kimmich doesn't have his off ball movement for goal, KDB doesn't have his tackle and stamina, Rodri doesn't have his pressing intensity, Kovacic doesn't have his passing range, FDJ doesn't have his versatility, Pedri doesn't have his tactical discipline ,Rice doesn't have his level of playmaking....

I don't think I can see any of those midfielders running on the 94+ mins and score a goal like he did.

Not to mention it is extremely rare to find a similar player that can do all the things Barella does, like dribbling and tackling good at the same time with that crazy work rate and knows and can move to goal scoring position after running all game?

If Barella was at Liverpool, Real, Barcelona or City all people would be calling it criminal he's not a top Ballon d'Or candidate...
We said the same about Lukaku and Icardi.

Again I ask, what is Barella world class at?

Outside of running his ass off game.in and game out staying injury free, he's really not exceptional at anything.

FDJ has played as CB and DMF but he's a natural number 6 and one of the best ball carriers in world football. Rest of the aforementioned are world class at something. What is Barella world class at?

How he is coached and instructed to play has a big influence on what we see. Spectators can deconstruct, but they can't really know what was asked of him. His only obvious weakness is shooting imo

Don't believe I ever said that about Lukaku after he turned 21. He was mostly a big disappointment given his potential.

On Icardi, no one said Ballon d'Or level. Clinical etc sure. Top box striker, maybe. But that's where it ends.

Again I ask, what is Barella world class at?
He is world class, end of. It's not nitpicking or picking qualities and saying he is world class because of this.

This is pretty much what's wrong with football.
Sergio Ramos, great with the ball, can score, but defensively average and everyone calls him world class because no CB could score or cross like him.
Pique, below average defensively. Same with Bonucci. But great with the ball, long range balls, could score.. people called them world class despite being mediocre at their primary role.

Let's not play this game and stick to football. And Barella is world class. End of.
Outside of running his ass off game.in and game out staying injury free, he's really not exceptional at anything.
What are the others you rate so high exceptional at?

De Bruyne, Bellingham, Modric, and Valverde are the only players I'd take over him for a single match.

And I haven't watched enough Real this year to know if Modric still has "it."

Rodri? A destroyer and playmaker all rolled in one. Flawless positioning, tackling and interceptions, ball control and possession/distrubtion passing range, mid range shooting.

i think i already went over this. Which player did you want to go over in detail? Part of the problem is barella has had few "the eagle has landed" moments vs top teams at the highest level. Answer this: would comfortably build around and trust him to take over big UCL games? Because as things stand, Hakan is our midfield general. Contrast with Kimmich 3 season ago where he was comfortably given free rein to dictate games. In terms of talent and temperament he was trusted. I don't think we feel the same about Barella. Not in a decisive game.

World class = according to normal definition mens you are among the best at what you do.

Barella is among the best in his position, meaning he can obviously be viewed as world class, it doesn’t matter if you have one or two extraordinary qualities or is more all round player, if you’re among one of the best you are by definition world class.

Modrić is more of a bench option for Real nowadays. An old, but great bench option

Valverde is as good as Barella is, but he was amazing 2 seasons ago and he isn't showing the same dominating performances as before. Real fans are hypercritical of all their players, more than FIF is, and there is something said about how Valverde is used as a utility player, Ancelotti puts him all over the pitch ...maybe that is why people aren't hyping him up as much. He is clearly their Barella right now

Valverde not as good technically as Barella with passing imo. Much better finisher though

Valverde is more like Frattesi type. Complementary player, not a leader.

I'm not sure if there ever was a "consensus" or at least none on FiF that Lukaku is world-class, but yes, we did have those discussions about Icardi, and rightly so. Only someone blind and foolish wouldn't agree with that back when those conversations were happening.

But getting back to your original question about Barella, it seems like you're asking the wrong question, or perhaps you're asking a loaded question, like the one "Have you finally stopped cheating on your wife?".
Whatever aspect of his game I highlight as world-class, you'll just name another player who excels in that area or skill (even if it's just by a little or by a significant margin), and then refute my argument.

It's like saying Traore is "world-class" at sprinting/speed/pace, therefore he's a world-class winger.

What I can confidently say about Barella being world-class is the fact that he comfortably secures a spot in every team in the world, consistently elevating the performance of whichever team he's on, without ever compromising on quality.

Yet, the grass always seems greener on the other side.

I don't think that Googles definition is sufficient enough. That would mean Acerbi, Toro are world class. Bruno Fernandes, Onana, Valverde too. Kobel and Brandt.

There needs to be a distinction between performing vs Empoli and performing vs a Bayern calibre club in a UCL playoff game which Barella has yet to do (consistently at least).
