Love him or hate him, he's one of those players that will always be surrounded by controversey. Hopefully he didn't say anything racist to Zidane, because that would definitely tarnish what has been a good World Cup, free of racism and other unsavory incidents.

Damn it! Matrix allowed his head to be shaved by Drugivaro... Drugivaro should have a job in the barber shop. I mean, Matrix, Ibrahimovic and Del Piero... did he cut them all? :(

I don't like it, because it was his hair that made me sure that it was him with the ball usually. Hopefully they'll grow back once the season starts. :)

For some reason I have been lumped into the Materazzi hater crew by Mike and Helal (we are so not badminton partners anymore :D ). I have always been on the fence about him, and praise him when he does well and rag on him when he does terrible. I do not let my emotions get into the way of making a proper evaluation of him. If you want to see what I am talking about look up my post about him earlier in this thread where I talked about his pros and cons.

Anyways getting to my point Materazzi played a pretty decent game last night and I believe it was more his reputation than anything that led to the ref handing out what turned out to be a very soft penalty indeed. If anything Zambrotta's tackle was much more deserving of a spot kick than Materazzi's touch. He did very well to leap like that on top of Viera and the fact that he did it over him was just that much more satisfying.

In sum the Matrix had a good tournament with some really great performances thrown in there for good measure. Add that to the fact that he is Italy's joint top scorer and you have one of the stars of the tournement winning team.

The fact that he was involved in the sending off of Zidane may have tarnished his performance in some people's eye's but to me had it been the other way around Zidane would have been praised for the way he was able to provoke the Matrix into a stupid move. But seeing as the way it happened people are trying to absolve Zizou of all blame while laying all the blame on Materazzi for his verbal provokation. The Guradian decided to spread around the naty rumour of the Matrix calling Zizou a terrorist all the proof I need to refute that is right here: http://www.inter.it/aas/news/reader?N=23321&L=en

As for the stuff about making a racial slur seems a little shady to me. His involvement in the anti racism program with Martins and Adriano and the strong relationship he had with Kallon while he was at Inter makes me doubt such a claim.

As for Zizou himself people like catanha seem to have forgotten his past deviant acts while on the pitch. His red card in the 98 finals stands out as the most obvious but perhaps his career total of 20 straight red cards might force some people to change their mind on whether or not Zizou is the angel everyone is making him out to be. Followers of La Liga should be more than familiar with this type of atypical behavious from him.

Also thank you Tim for your responses to catanha's very vocal condemnations of Materazzi, you have saved me a lot of time. However let me just add this; catanha the fact that you were ashamed to tell your co workers the truth about what club Materazzi plays for, to me says a lot about your character.

here's the photo, thanks Alex.

what a disgrace, what a clown, what a oxygen bandit, what a poor excuse for a human.

all World Cup, the message is clear, no racism, captains are reading statements before matches to get rid of racism, and this farking fool provokes the greatest of all time in a racist manner to get him sent off.

yes, please excuse my "pussiness", ffs....
how is it pussy if I do not stand for racism, I love my brutal defenders, it was the likes of Kohler, Ferri, Julio Cesar that made me love the game, but Materazzi is a hack, not a hardnut defender.

for the record, it does not surprise me that many people are defending Materazzi's actions, and when it is proven he racially insulted Zidane will continue to defend him, because these were the same people praising the Inter fans who threw banana peels at Dida, who made monkey noises against Zoro....nazis.

The UK Daily Mail reported that with the help of an expert lip reader it was able to decipher that first Marco Matterazzi called the French star the Italian equivalent of 'n--ger', and then insulted both his mother and his Muslim background by saying he is the 'son of a terrorist wh-re.

Marco Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane who once played for Italian side Juventus - grabbed his opponent and told him 'hold on, wait, that one's not for a n--er like you.' As the players walked forward Materazzi said: 'We all know you are the son of a terrorist wh-re.' Then, just before the headbutt, he was seen saying,: 'So just f-ck -ff.'

for you, khaled.

Thanks for posting that catanha,i will wait and see what zidane will say in the next few days, but i am sure that zidane will confirm that something bad was said to him, zidane is not that stupid to have done this headbutt if materazzi didnt say something serious to him.

From Marco Materazzi himself;

ROME - (ANSA) - "It is absolutely not true. I didn't say terrorist. I'm ignorant, I don't even know what it means," said Marco Materazzi on the incident in last night's World Cup final which led to Zinedine Zidane's sending-off. Materazzi denied saying what was reported today by British newspaper The Guardian. "The whole world saw what happened live on TV," he said.

If he says he didn't say it then I believe him. News have circulated that Zidane will reveal what was said when he has calmed down. Till then I don't think anybody should believe what the media is saying. They always exaggerate the issue.

exactly, he has denied only saying terrorist, and I'm an Inter fan, I see him every week, I know what he has done and what he is capable of, I'd believe a Gattuso before I believe the word of Materazzi.

So you think Materazzi is this smart?

I thought the old Materazzi we saw in Inter gets send off by using elbows, arms and legs to hit his opponent cruelly. I have no idea Materazzi had the ability to abuse other players verbally. :(

His way of playing football is cruel, and disgusting, but he's a liar? Never knew that.

If he did racially abuse Zidane, I think he should face some sort of serious suspension.

You only know what Materazzi is capable of on the field, not off it. By the latter, I am referring to his personality, his character, his viewpoint with regards to racism, nationalism, et al.

As such, you should not pretend to be a Marco-expert, at any rate.

Your perpetuated attacks on Materazzi can be construed as a form of slander. You are maligning his character on the basis of his on-field antics. You have simply conjectured what you want to believe.

Ciao,
Tim
