Did you expect the decision?
“I could see it coming though I was only wrong by a dozen days. You could be the best coach in the world but you won’t get very far if you don’t have the empathy of the players, if you cannot get along with those who have a bit more personality, and those who don’t play much. These are the ones who will help you in the difficult moments.”
How much influence did the fans have on Perez?
“Madrid is a difficult place, so it’s not enough to just have the president’s support. The fans want more than just 1-0 wins as scoring isn’t enough if you concede too many goals. That is why Benitez was at risk.
Do you think Rafa will change?
“Knowing him, no. It’s always the same problems with him. Instead of joining Madrid and creating a good relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, he jumped on the Bale bandwagon, which is something I’ve already seen him do. In his first day at Pinetina he began to chat with Zanetti, Cambiasso and Cordoba but did not say a word to Chivu. The fact that he didn’t speak the same language was a bit weak as an excuse.”
Does Zidane convince you?
“I saw no other option but for him to take charge, or for Carlo Ancelotti to return. It’s a logical choice, and the strength of Zidane’s personality will be good for the dressing room, particularly as he has previously worked with the players. But it will not be a walk in the park. Former greats that take to the bench are often under pressure after two or three games to get a result. I however wish he and Santiago Solari well.”
