I think there is a lot to learn from what transpired during the Roma match at the time of Martinez's substitution and thereafter. The first thing it highlights is that the media and supporters really have no idea and all the reports focusing on the "bust-up" between coach and player are nothing but speculation: outsiders trying to read into what they see on the surface or at face value.
Having seen the videos, the reality of the situation was very different and having the cameras at the BBQ dispelled and put an end to any speculation. There were reports Martinez apologised to his coach and teammates soon after the match. One thing I really like about Martinez is that he has humility and knows when he is wrong. In the past, when his Dad made comments to the media, he took it upon himself to apologise and once again he has done likewise. In the past, we have seen players act like spoilt brats and refuse to back down when they were clearly in the wrong so I think Martinez should be complimented for realising his mistake.
When I saw the photos of the BBQ and the videos of the boxing match, I could not help but think how special our playing group and coach are. Simultaneously, I also realised how strong and united they had to be to end Juventus' Serie A hegemony by fighting for our first Championship in 11 years during a global pandemic, without the support of their fans in the stadium, with owners that were hiding on another continent implementing changes to our brand, with endless speculation about the club's ownership and our future. All the while, the external tempest has been raging and the media have had their knives out, writing and endlessly speculating about the club.
Our coach and players stayed focused and came through the other end with flying colours. And even now, with the Championship wrapped up, they are still playing to win: which is a huge change from when we would try and settle for a draw, play conservatively and just try and get by. For me, that is the difference between cowardice and a winning mentality.
What we achieved this season is no small feat. Everyone contributed to the cause and I am proud of our squad and coach and hope they will all be here again next season to continue what we have started this season.
FORZA INTER!
