But I’m still not convinced it should be an assist anymore than a deflected shot which grazes a defender’s legs should be an own goal.

The last pass or touch has to be our own player. Penalty does not count of course, because their goalie stopped the shot.

Actually the intention of the cross is someone to score a goal.
While, the ball deflected by keeper and touching Mkhitaryan by accident, hardly could be assist by the latter by any means.
You can give that assist to Carnesechi as he has more fault for sending the ball right to Darmian.
I doubt that Mkhitaryan even realized that the ball touched him.
