Opinion:

I think the voting on the match ups should be made at the end of the season. I think it would add an extra dimension to it as some people might go for up-and-comers and would facilitate conversation as the season goes on and people could discuss how their players are going and so forth.

I'm only looking in from the outside but I like this idea of judging at the end of the season. We don't know who's going to have a bad season as well as you said, an up and comer could have an electric season which could lead to some very bold picks in the last stages.
