I know Cuchu is hated at FIF now, but till I see a better alternative, I would prefer this against Catania:

Palacio
Alvarez
Nagatomo - Kovacic - Guarin - Jonathan
Cambiasso
Juan - Ranocchia - Campagnaro
Handanovic

Its the start of the season, the more important thing is to contain goals... if need be, Icardi and Taider can be brought in play in the 2nd half...

OMG...Mazzarri posts on FIF!!! :epicwin:

Have you seen Ranocchia run? Lets face it, we just don't have top players for every role anymore...

Cambiasso, its the experience. Cuchu may be a shadow of what he used to be, but unfortunately, he is till the best we got to cover for our defense. Taider, or at least what I saw of him last season, cannot play this role... he is more suited to replace Guarin.

we talk about DM not CB ... and yes rano is for sure faster that cuchu and has better stamina, and rano can defend, cuchu cant ... etoo played as striker at barca, at inter he played winger .. so why can taider play DM ... its not like he is going to be pure DM .. if we have good mobility in mid, problem is more less solved

edit: cuchu cant use his experience when he is DEAD

We don't need an alternative for cuchu, not only is he unable to attack, defend, or pass, his position is completely unnecessary in mazzari's system. I can't think of a single team that plays 3 at the back while using a DM at the same time

Cuchu doesn't really do anything out there. Mazzarri seems to be trying to turn him into a Pirlo-like regista from what I've seen of the preseason and the Genoa game. And that's just all sorts of wrong quite honestly. Mudingayi would be a better solution if it absolutely came down to 'protecting the defense'

As it is, I'm in the camp of having an athletic and youthful midfield of Taider, Kovacic and Guarin.

I'm really sorry to say, but anyone saying we should play Cambiasso purely on the basis that on paper he is a DM deserves a huge facepalm, to be honest.

And you can go fuck yourself, Cuntverse, it's not like Guarin has been shit in the past weeks. Also, Kova-Taider-Alvarez looks frail like china

Can't speak for Taider, but both Alvarez and Kovacic lose the ball far far less and retrieve the ball back more often than Guarin. Also Taider is meant to be the most defensively suited of the lot.

Guarin has strongpoints but he's a absolute strain on our defense, given the amount of times he turns the ball over

Exactly.

You think Guarin is more defensively capable than Kovacic or Alvarez? Why? Because he's big? Alvarez and Kovacic are far more effective in screening and defensive covering. In fact, I find myself constantly and pleasantly surprised by how Alvarez keeps tracking back and actually wins the ball back. Also, as RD said, these two don't lose the ball half as much as Guarin to begin with.

so you would sell Guarin right now? there is no future in the Alvarez-Taider-Kovačić midfield, and especially with those wingbacks. I expect us being overrun against big teams.

also, Guarin seems to pass better than before, and more importantly, he passes quicker. not necessarly a better choice for midfield than Taider or Alvarez, but definately not 'go fuck himself' worthy. so say what you want, I think the guy will have a good season here since I believe in miracles and Mazzarri

Would I sell him? No, I don't think we can find an suitable replacement.

But criticising him is totally justified. He's got the potential to be a top asset for the team yet he still tries to everything on his own. The amount of times he loses the ball trying to pull of some stupid shit is really frustrating.

Not to say Mazzari can't fix that, it's not hard to fix, he just needs to restrain himself and keep it simple at times. I'm all for him taking risks when we're breaking on the counter, but not when we're pressed forward, Jonathan's basically inside the box and Campagnaro's pushed up also

ps: u didn't address Uni's question as to why you think he's better defensively than Kovacic & co, other than the fact that he's bigger

It's 2013 and we still talking about Cuchu, I believe in Mazzarri, so sit back and relax, Mazzarri knows what to do...

because he is a force, that can be successfully utilised in the middle. and no, I don't think he is a good tackler, but we need bullies like that in our team. I'd say his speed and stamina can also be a plus, he's definately improved there since he started playing for Inter. again, I also agree that criticising him is justified, but I've came to a point where I don't want to bash every player just because he was half-shit, half-good for us the previous season. Altho I don't want to compare players, I'd say he is as important in defence and attack as Pogba/Marchisio role is at Juve (when Pogba isn't playing instead of Pirlo, ofc). Taider is still an unknown factor for me, since I don't know how Mazzarri wants him deployed, while we all know Kovačić is great with the ball, but we want him to not be the 'last midfielder', so to speak.

He is not perfect. Same with Alvarez, and Ricky really looks like a better player now that he is motivated, has some confidence.. and I see both of them having an important role in this season, even if my FM skills would already sold both, probably  so I don't expect those two to be world beaters. but still

I got really mad how Guarin can fuck off altho he is a good asset in both defence and attack :/ he is showing it now. I bet you he won't lose the ball as much in a months time. Just call it a hunch.

Kova-Taider-Alvarez can probably work good against small teams, I don't know, have nothing to back up this too. But Guarin is crucial for the big games (instead of Alvarez, so we can have a bit more menacing midfield)

the only ones that are left are the broken ones - Obi, Zanetti, Mudingayi, - the soon to be executed by an electric chair - Kuzmanović & Mariga - the old ones - Olsen & Cambiasso. Not really that good of a bench, is it, plus Cambi will play a lot this year, I know some of you won't enjoy that, I certainly won't. But that's how it is, our midfield would still need some new blood plus a few exits.

Guarin is at his best when he keeps it simple. Alas, he only does the simple things 10% of the time. The other 90% he's trying dribble the entire opposing team and/or unloading a very hopeful shot that ends up in the Curva Nord. Quite frustrating to say the least. For now, he deserves to start IMO. If Mazza can get him to rein it in, he can be huge for us.
