Good move for Roma until he finds another childhood club by the end of 2024.

Mourinho loves the siege mentality among his players - we've seen him do it during his career with all the teams/players he coached. He always tried/s to create a mentality of 'us against the world'.
Now, if there is one player that has the world against him, laughing at him, then it's lakaka. // Mou and Roma would be the right team for him now, because they'll pamper his ass and confirm lakaka's victim status. Which - I predict - in turn will actually make lakaka play well.

edit: although I still see him miss open headers/sitters in finals. It's the nature of the lakaka- not even Mou can fix it.

This narrative is completely false and has been exaggerated by his fanboys just because he scored some goals in a row in like 4 league games or something. Which was much after he came back. He was part of the problem for far longer than he was part of any solution (in Serie A, because he was almost useless in CL)

To be completely honest, last season we managed to bounce back exactly when Lukaku came back. I'm not saying that he changed the season for us but he was one of the biggest reasons that we've gotten some crucial wins which boosted our morale and somehow revived what was dying. Lautaro and Dzeko were going through a very poor form and Correa was basically inexistent in these minutes he played.
We managed to bounce when we played Benfica and drew Napoli or Milan for the SF, which meant that Inzaghi started to play for two fronts rather than be in complete disarray and not sure what to choose from. Lukaku returning merely coincided with that. Unless you want to credit Joaquin Correa as well, because him starting also changed this

We got through the groups with almost zero input by Lukaku (you can highlight a 4-0 goal vs Viktoria if you wish), by beating Barcelona and almost beating them away, by scoring 3 there. Not even "healthy" Lukaku managed to help us do anything near that against Barcelona B at home, let alone their first team away...
Apart from the Porto goal which was rather lucky (double effort, goalkeeper didn't expect the 2nd shot right at him) but still it is what counted for the tie, his presence wasn't really significant. You can give him the PK, but we only missed one last season iirc.

If he was considered so valuable as people say, he'd be playing in CL which had been our priority by that time. He had a total of 120 minutes in 5 KO matches, which is like slightly over 25 minutes total if you add extra time which isn't part of these statistics. A 65th minute sub in CL at best.

When did he become a starter in Serie A again?

Mid to end of February.

Let's see the schedule:
13/2 Sampdoria away. His first start since forever against the worst team in the league. Final score against the worst defense? 0-0
18/2 Udinese at home. Started and got his first goal in a long while and like his 3rd goal of the season. 3-1 victory where he scored the opener. The sad part is that we started winning only when he got subbed for Lautaro.
22/2 Porto at home: 1-0, Lukaku scored. As a sub
26/2 Bologna away. Started. We lost (conceded after he was subbed out)
5/3 Lecce at home. 2-0 win, came on as a sub after the score was settled and didn't do his usual stat padding.
10/3 Spezia away. Started and played the entire game in a 2-1 loss. Scored our goal with a PK.
14/3 Porto away. Played as a sub, zero contribution. If anything, was rather useless in counter attacks which was why he was slotted in.
18/3 Juventus at home. Played as a starter in another derby home loss.
1/4 Fiorentina at home. Another start, another goalless loss. Played the entire game once again.
4/4 Juventus away. Coppa semi, scores an equalizing last minute PK as a sub. Well done.
7/4 Salernitana away. 1-1 draw in a game he started. At least he got credited with an assist with a fluke header that was intended for someone else :D
11/4 Benfica away. Came on as a sub and did what he needed to with the penalty to settle a vital 2-0 away win. Anonymous apart from that.
15/4 Monza at home. Lost in a game he played the entire game [at home] without scoring once more!
19/4 Benfica at home. 3-3 thriller after a casual 3-1 lead for the team, with Lukaku coming on for the last 14 minutes. Coincidentally, that was at 2-1, which became 3-1 almost instantly with Correa and then we suddenly collapsed and conceded 2 in 5 minutes.
23/4 Empoli away. Finally, team morale is high as we are CL semi-finalists. And yours truly finally shows us, scores 2 in an away win.
26/4 Juventus at home. Came on as a late sub, all we had to do was hold on an early 1-0 lead.
30/4 Lazio at home. A win in a big game after a while. 3-1 with Lukaku actually contributing, but only after Lautaro, Hakan and Gosens came to the game.
3/5 Verona away. A rather difficult exit to Verona who were chasing points to stay up, yet we beat them easily 6-0. Lukaku did not feature one second in this game.
6/5 Roma away. Another big win in short space for the team. Lukaku started and scored. This is where he starts his scoring streak in the league.
10/5 Milan "away". Team wins emphatically but can only keep it to 2-0. Lukaku enters in the 70th minute, relatively anonymous.
13/5 Sassuolo at home. Possibly Lukaku's best game in the season with our first and last goal in a 4-2 victory.
21/5 Napoli away. Lukaku gets his 4th in 3 Serie A games with an equalizer that wouldn't hold. In a rather bad outing for the team.
24/5 Fiorentina Coppa final. Came as a sub with 35 minutes to go. Score was already settled at 2-1 from first half.
27/5 Atalanta at home. Scored the opener to continue his league scoring streak (5 in 4 games)
3/6 Torino away. We won 1-0 and he ended his scoring streak. Gets credited with an assist simply for being the last player to lay a pass to the scorer who hit a wonderful strike from far.
10/6 Manchester City CL final. Well, it is what is it...

So when Lukaku came back - and I'm going to include the three games he featured as a sub before the start of that list (Milan derby win, Cremonese win and Empoli loss and the Atalanta win where he started, right before the derby) we have:

Overall:
18 wins
5 draws
8 losses

In Serie A:
11 wins
2 draws
7 losses

As a starter:
8 wins (one in Coppa Italia)
2 draws
6 losses [including 3 in a row and a 5 winless game streak!]

With Lukaku not starting or staying benched:
8 wins
3 draws
2 losses

Games he did not start include CL quarters, semis and final, Coppa semis vs Juventus and final. So it's not as if we saved him for the tough ones...

So by looking at this, when Lukaku started, we had a much worse record than when he did not.
We actually won less than 50% of our Serie A games when he returned to a starting role.

For someone earning 50% more than your best striker, his output was far less than half of that. Complete waste of money, and apart from the goal vs Porto, a late PK vs Juventus in the Coppa semi (1st leg) and a scoring streak in May, this was a completely forgettable season. Leaving the CL final memes aside and all the media garbage that follows.

So no, I think the narrative that he somehow resurrected our season has to get dropped by every single member at FIF. It's offensive to the players that actually did contribute to the run. Lukaku had a good 20 day period in the league in the final stages which is why a lot of people sweetened to him during that time and why some got persuaded that him coming back on a full transfer would be prudent. But that's really a very small sample out of a very poor situation that gets magnified whilst everything else gets ignored and falsified.

I'll repeat that Lukaku's return hasn't provided any boost. If anything, the numbers show that when he started, we struggled even more. Now I'd like to see the arguments that it was because Correa, Gosens, Bellanova and a few others were playing as well... Which kinda ruins the narrative in place as well and just reinforces that Lukaku has different treatment here for whatever reason people adore him.

Saying all that, he'd be a good addition for Roma on a cheap loan, as long as Mourinho knows how to handle him and actually wants to do that. But aside from that, him returning to the league isn't some coup.

Tldr; Lukaku sucks

more like tldr; It took Lukaku 19 games to "get it going" rather than "once he became back, Inter was back". And he only started contributing after 15 games.

Inter's overall record before Lukaku was injured and with Lukaku participating isn't much different. And I don't think people expected that crazy 9 wins 7 losses situation to be the norm.

I don't think it's worth discussing with you @brehme1989 over Lukaku's situation because first of all, you don't even understood what I meant by my point above. Secondly, you tend to write based on hate which most of times makes no sense to what you write, whether it has to do with Lukaku or anything else.

I'm not going to argue but just because I don't want to discredit some of the good things he has done over that period while Inter was in critical situation doesn't make me a fanboy, because I have said numerous of times that we should never redeem Lukaku and once loan will expire, he has to go, no matter what. But then again, I'm sure you will comeback with another great poetic post with a bunch of unnecessary stats to convince people, but you know, there's still some people whom watch football from a different prespective.

Well this stats that brehme posted definitely confirm that starting Lukaku in CL final wouldn't help us at all. For all fanboys that wanted Limone head cause of that.

How on earth do you judge that I "hate" someone? What kind of nonsensical approach is that ?

I disagree with you, therefore you hate whatever I agree with. Seriously???

Where do you see any hate? All I did was list the series of games that Lukaku participated in after he "came back". You disagree with that? Good for you. There's no basis to disagree on, so you're resorting to unquantifiable nonsense such as "hatred" expecting the other person to shy away because he doesn't like being labelled

I guess you don't want to argue because yoy hate it when you're wrong and get proven for it on and on... How's that for a statement?

now bear with me on this one....

its almost, maybe just almost... like lukaku was dropped from the starting line up for the easiest games?

Do you know the TWO league matches he didnt start since going back to fitness for Inter?

2-0 vs Lecce
6-0 vs Verona

Its not exactly dropping him for big games vs Juventus, etc.

Of course those are games we won. Its almost like, when fit, Lukaku played all of our biggest games in the league - vs Juve, vs Milan, vs Roma, vs Napoli, vs Atalanta, vs Lazio.

Mind Blown?

And Monza at home 0-1

And Spezia away. 2-1 loss

Yes, the toughest of the lot.

But somehow a CL last 16 tie, a CL quarter, a derby CL semi, a CL final, a derby Coppa semi and a Coppa final are bundled in with Lecce at home and Verona away.

"The glove doesn't fit".

Now do Joaquin Correa!

Dude, we all know Lukaku has been garbage on his second stint and it was nowhere near what Interisti expected but even when things have gone SLIGHTLY good in Lukaku's way, you would come up with some things that barely made any sense. And no, it's not because I don't agree with you, but there was a few times in which your point made zero sense whether it was regarding Premierleague or whatever but I didn't even bother to respond because I know you will comeback with another senseless post.

I already said, there's people who watch football from a different prespective. Statistics usually tell a lot of things, but at the same time when you watch actual football you don't need stats to prove yourself that X player is doing good or bad.

You didn't even bother with my point above because I never said Lukaku was the main reason that we revived our season, but he was one of few reasons that we won some matches. Some players have high authority among others and their name brings some confidence when they are around, whether they suck at that exact period or not. Lukaku is a well-known name in football, but lately he's been jerking around like a whore, well that's another story, but coming up with some bullshit like "fanboys" and what the fuck ever it's just a cheap shot on backing up your argument.

We've been around through thick and thin mate ;)

But I did and that's exactly what I contested. The first part was because you mentioned something that people take for gospel here, it wasn't directed at you and I didn't really make it personal in that thread. It was a general comment on this attitude.

Yet your statement about "some matches" is pretty much reduced to the Empoli, Roma and Sassuolo games. That's 3 games out of 20+ he featured since returning.

He was one of the main culprits for having a terrible run against Spezia, Juventus, Fiorentina, Salernitana, Monza just before the Empoli game. What was between Monza and Empoli? Qualifying against Benfica!

It was obvious that the team had focused everything on the Champions League and put Serie A on second gear.

As for my buddy @.h. who has some weird obsessions, I'll just save him the trouble.

Joaquin Correa was injured until the Porto return game. He returned vs Juventus as a sub and was instantly a starter ever since. This was between the Benfica and Coppa derbies.

Vs Fiorentina. Correa started with Lukaku
Vs Salernitana. Correa started with Lukaku
Vs Monza. Correa started with Lukaku
Vs Empoli. Correa started with Lukaku
Vs Lazio. Correa started with Lukaku
Vs Verona. Correa did not play one second, just like Lukaku.
Vs Roma. Correa started with Lukaku
Vs Sassuolo. Correa started with Lukaku
Vs Napoli. Correa started with Lukaku

Then Correa missed the last two league games due to another injury.

Whether Lukaku’s late season contribution was overrated or not, he was still a striker that Inzaghi wanted to keep for the new season, and Inter board were willing to re-acquire.

Inzaghi and the board obviously valued Lukaku, to the point where they were willing to spend on him again. This includes the same Inzaghi who preferred Dzeko in the big games last season.

We all know @brehme1989 . If Lukaku starts scoring for Roma, it will be only because of Mourinho according him. If not, the blame will be entirely on Lukaka.
I don't just understand why Brehme doesn't confess that he is Lukaka hater, when that fact is quite obvious.

I don't want to go in useless debate, but no, he wasn't. He was right about the loan move, but it was lucky guess, as he didn't say that Lukaka will miss half of the season due to injury.

Just because you want to simplify everything to binary 010101s, doesn't mean that everyone is like that.

There's nothing to hate about Lukaku.
There's also nothing to excite anyone about Lukaku and for all the self-absorption and the "look-at-me" attitude, there really isn't that much.

He hasn't produced any magical moments wearing the Inter shirts. Apart from several Milano Derby goals - but not actual winners or late game salvations- there's virtually nothing. Remarkably he has achieved the opposite. He's performed wonders against the club when it matters (Shakthar "Mastercard priceless" head block, Sevilla own goal, City miracle).
For someone who scored that much, it's rather alarming how "vanilla" his passage has been. Sure, we won the Scudetto as the favorites with possibly our highest budget of all time but during these 4 years that Lukaku has been on-and-off in our lives, I can remember:
- Sanchez winner vs Juventus
- Perisic 4-2 winner vs Juventus in the Coppa final
- Inter thumping Milan in the Supercoppa 3-0
- Inter beating Milan twice in the CL semis with Mkhitaryan, Dzeko and Lautaro scoring the goals, who have been amongst the most hated FIF players even
- Sensi scoring in the Coppa extra-time
- Ranocchia scoring in the Coppa with a bicycle kick
- De Vrij getting the 3-2 vs Milan in the 0-2 to 4-2 turnaround
- Gosens getting that 3rd in Barcelona

Lukaku's biggest moment with an Inter shirt tragically could be his fight with Zlatan
And from a scoring perspective, the one moment I think most would remember his celebration was scoring the 5-0 vs Shakhtar in the EL semi final where he was thrilled as a kid getting a Happy Meal for the first time...
Maybe you can add some late game penalty goals, like Roma or Juventus [Coppa], but they weren't really winning strikes.
Or the cringe moment he took his shirt and moved to the corner flag after that 4-2 win vs Milan. I guess that counts for some.

You could also blame Covid for the lack of passion towards Lukaku but I don't think others suffer from this. I guess when his best game came in a relatively empty Napoli stadium you could argue this, but still. Too vanilla to have any sort of feelings about him with the Inter shirt.

When we look back 10 years from now, we'll have to force it to find special highlights involving Lukaku with Inter. That's where I'm leading at.

Ronaldo goal vs Lazio. Special.
Milito goal vs Bayern. Special.
Milito goal vs Siena. Special.
Recoba goal vs Sampdoria. Special.
Maicon goal vs Juventus. Special.
Nainggolan goal vs Juventus. Special.
Vecino goal vs Lazio. Special.
Vecino goal vs Tottenham. Special.
Adriano header vs Milan. Special.
Icardi hatrick vs Milan. Special.
Sanchez winner vs Juventus. Special.
Eto'o goal vs Chelsea. Special.
Samuel goal vs Siena. Special.
Pandev goal vs Milan. Special.

Maybe Mourinho can make Lukaku special for Roma... who knows. But he's pretty much the only high profile striker we've had that doesn't have these iconic moments and he's had more than a fair share of sample.

This is what doesn't give Lukaku extra points for me. But hate? Come on, that's the weakest claim you can make because you don't want to understand why some things are said and they collide with the narrative you want to have in your head.
