Sommer will be a very good backup for us. He still has some game to him but at his age he lacks that quick response as his beer hoisting muscles will surely outnumber his quick twitch options. On top of the age there is likely a communication issue too.

By the way I don't think he's poor playing out of the pipes. That game was shit conditions. But he is 35. Guy's a pro but age is undefeated. This season the defense will need to help him out a bit more than they had to with Onana, if he is the starter.

Guys it was a friendly, it was preseason, it was his first match and it was played under heavy conditions. At least give him a couple of matches before getting worried.

When you pay 6m for a 35yo he should have zero time to adapt. Literally.

Sommer is our first XI GK and a match of adaptation means points lost. Which might cost us heavily at the end of the season. Sorry but he must be judged from match 1.

He saved one penalty. Overall, he was not bad considering the conditions and his first game.

He didnt save any and was probably the worst guy out there.

I didn't find any problem with his reflexes and handling so that's a good start.

All his problems in the last match were down to communication and pitch condition. Many times he wanted to rush out, then hesitated, most likely because of the lack of understanding between the defense line. Then the pitch was waterlogged which made the ball bounce in a weird inconsistent way, it's very hard for GK to position in such conditions.

Then the players couldn't weight a pass correctly which led them to opting for safer decisions i.e. clearing the ball out of bounds, instead of combining with the GK. It's understandable, you can't overhit a pass to a GK for obvious reasons. But if they didn't overhit, the ball could hit a pond, stop and be intercepted by the opponent.

So overall, the game was just a mess and no conclusions should be made. I will just be happy that we finally have a starting GK.

Is it just me? I finally know how to articulate my feelings about him playing ball with his feet, it is not the technical part that makes me think he is not good with it; it is the composure, when he is under pressure his vision kind of got tunneled and he cannot anticipate what the next touch or target to pass.

People said he is good playing with his feet, I mean if you are referring to just the accuracy in stress free scenario, yea he is accurate, but that is it.

I mean I don't think I watch enough to judge, but just my 2 cents so far.

I hope I am wrong.

P.S. I don't doubt his GK skills, even it has been a bit shaky so far, I think it is just a new environment thing.

So what is the standard of a good GK playing with their feet? Any example. I want to adjust my expectation to a reasonable degree. Someone is going to say Sommer I feel like.

Some fantastic passes and our best player of the match, made some good saves

Only Onana, Varane, and Casemiro could come out of this game with some sort of dignity. The rest are just garbage and should be fined.

He does add a different dimension to our game for sure.

Our best signing so far. I think teams will stop trying to press us so hard with him there. Shift Rashford out wide and get him firing some of those passes to him.

At least we signed this man. He has the mentality, confidence, and skill level to be a United player. It's a shame a lot of his teammates are not at that level.

Together with Varane, easily our two best players in these two matches.

Pep weren't lying when he said he's like a holding midfielder.

We are almost for sure to know now that Onana is a successful acquisition.

He didn't deserve to be on the losing side today. He would be the perfect keeper for a dominating team and I hope we'll get there so we can see his best work.

Can he be our next captain? Our Neuer?

Everyone talking about Onana in Sommer thread, but I found out he took a pay cut to join us too, not a lot, but the gesture speaks volume, and I am talking about net. I guess he values play time a lot more. This is good for us.
