I was thinking the same thing. There was one ball in particular in the second half he let go through that if the Benfica player had anticipated him doing that could have resulted in a dangerous situation. However the Benfica player probably thought he would clear it as most defenders at this level do.I was watching the match on Sky Italia and Bergomi multiple times pointed out his ball watching tendency as very concerning. Not just in the goals but also in some of the crosses that Benfica failed to capitalize Bergomi was saying that the defender should not let the ball go through but anticipate and clear out the area
He has a good approach towards movement forward but he seem to lack some proper italian defending awareness that hopefully can be teached
He is still a very green player for a 23 year old. He has athleticism, size and is actually very technical. He’s also a surprisingly progressive passer. Very modern in a way, however also in the bad ways. His positional awareness and reading of the game is less than any player in our primavera. I’m not saying that to be harsh on him it’s just the Italian school of defending emphasizes that. Even if they’re less technical or athletic.
The good news for him is he has some of the smartest defenders in the game to learn from in Acerbi and Darmian. Guys that don’t have near his physical gifts but have made great careers.
