This guy's new album is so amazing to me that I felt the need to make a thread and promote it. I really think guys like Handoyo, helal and some of the others would appreciate this CD, it's being talked about as a classic already and has topped the Billboards in Rap and R&B and also pop, I hear. He's been around for a very long time, around 13 years now but I never really became a fan of his until recently when he hooked up with my personal favorite (Kanye West) and signed to his new label, GOOD (getting out our dreams).

Do me a favor, and atleast download it if you're not willing to buy the CD. I guarantee you'll enjoy it.

Common: Did Kanye West Make Him Classic?
Wednesday - May 18, 2005
Talithia Kelly

He’s atypical, exceptional, and a rare find. His music is that of raw, uncut, straight hip-hop. In other words, the man has talent and that’s why he’s been around for so long. The Southside Chicago born jazz/rap combo artist jump started his career by winning the Source Magazine’s Unsigned Hype contest back in 1992 and shortly after released his first LP, Can I Borrow A Dollar?.

His new and forthcoming album was given a classic rating by XXL magazine (5 mics), but the artist alone can be seen as a classic figure amongst the Hip-Hop community. He’s best known for enriching the plains of hip-hop with his ear-popping political and social awareness messages. His first hard-hitting single, The Corner, off the new album has been in heavy rotation and paint vivid pictures of the rough, rugged, and raw life in the ghetto from introspect.

If you don’t know who I’m talking about then you either don’t know Hip-Hop, are too young to know the roots of Hip-Hop, or you’ve just been living under a rock. In either case you better ask somebody. It’s none other than Lonnie Rashied Lynn better known as Common (formerly Common Sense).

BE is the newest album born from the ingenious thoughts of poet/rapper Common and the impeccable production of none other than Kanye West (9 tracks) and Jay Dilla (2 tracks).

For those not familiar with the work of Jay Dilla (if you’re a true Hip-Hop head I’m sure you are) he produced the Life of Me and was instrumental in producing the last two A Tribe Called Quest albums. Those two brothers gave Common the soul needed, the raw Hip-Hop wanted.

I focused on a mission of creating an album where it was me and people got to know me. I wanted to create something special and classic that was just me...

Create something special and classic he did according to XXL. BE was created as an equilibrium between the past perception of Common and the reality of the artist. BE sets the record straight that just because Common is a self-conscious rapper does not mean he’s “preachy” and doesn’t like to have fun. That statement couldn’t be further from the truth.

Fortunately for the masses of true Hip-Hoppers and backpackers, BE is slated to be released May 24th on Kanye’s label G.O.O.D (Getting Out Our Dreams) Music. G.O.O.D Music features other noteworthy artists such as, John Legend, TLC, Consequence, and the group Sa’ra. The next single to be released off the album BE is said to be Go, another example of Common’s undaunted intellectual play on words.

Go, however, displays a less conscious and more sensual side of Common; a side of him that we have not seen. The underlying theme, conscious brothers have sex too, enough said. The racier side of Common is shown as he proceeds to act out two of his fantasies in the video for Go.

The first, being with a girl I’d been with before and I would have good sex with. Then another woman I was digging that was open and wanted to be with another girl and me too. What man has not wanted to live out that fantasy? I thought to myself, please let this be sexy but beautiful. I wanted it to be something my daughter could watch. I don’t want it to be something I’m not. I don’t want it to be something I can’t show my daughter and talk to her about. I can’t just put anything out there to sell records.

Throughout the creation of Go, Common made sure he had 100% input on the decisions regarding which models to use for the video. He had to have that connection. Once again Common proves to be one of the wordiest lyricist around yet he can maintain his conscious sense and versatility while still being one of the hottest MCs around.

So what else has Common been doing since he’s been off the music scene? Well, let’s see. You’ve seen him constantly on BET advertising safe sex (knowhivaids.com) using the ever so popular Spoken Word, which Rakiem referred to as rap being rhythm in poetry, but what else has he been up to?

Kanye’s working on his new album Late Registration so I’m around for that. I got a new hat line coming out called Soji, which is named after my neighbor because I liked it so much...it's a high-end hat line. I just did a remix on Faith’s Again. I’m trying to be a better father, going to the movies; I ride around listening to music, getting my hat line together, writing children’s books, knowhivaids.com, and I also have my own foundation, Common Ground. It's purpose helps disadvantaged Chicago youth with after school educations programs. At the same time the program uses the enriching tool of Hip-Hop as a teaching method rather than Hip-Hop being used as a tool of endangerment. The method is to use Hip-Hop as a tool of positivity instead of negativity. Everything’s looking good right now. I just got a classic rating from XXL on my new album so I’m hoping to get the same love from other magazines.

And why would Common not receive the same love from other magazines? There’s no logical reason he shouldn’t unless other magazines are hatin’ on the brother. Common is one of the most down-to-earth brothers in the industry thus far. In his eyes;

God is the source of everything. You gotta walk humble. Those who walk humble will be exalted at the end. At this point I believe in myself and I’m a cold artist and that I can create great music and that doesn’t make me a better person than somebody else and God gives us our gifts and it’s not there to flaunt in front of anybody; use them for the right purpose.

For anybody out there trying to make it in any industry this is Common’s advice to you.

Believe in who you are and love yourself. Show who you are, know who you are, and don’t be afraid of who you are. Just have fun in life, learn and grow. Know that there’s going to be some good days and some bad days.

BE comes highly recommended for lovers of TRUE Hip-Hop. For those of you with common sense and good taste, BE will be one of the classic CDs in the midst of your collection. BE is the mother of all come backs and this is precedented to be one of thehardest hitting CDs to surface since the passing of the great Tupac and Biggie.

Mark your calendars and make sure to cop Common's new joint, BE, May 24th is the day!

well its not my type of music lol.

I have ALOT of respect for rappers like Talib, Common, Black Star and Mos Def. But i just didnt get into their type of music.

When people were listening to the political rap back in the mid 90's i was sitting back getting high while listening to Mac Dre! :dielaugh:

Fair enough. I take it that you also don't listen to John Legend?

His debut album off of G.O.O.D (yes, I am biased as a Kanye fan.. it's my job) is great. It's called 'Get Lifted' and he's already released a hit single called 'Ordinary People'.

Conscious Hip Hop. :)

Be is a pretty decent album, it's a good album, mainstream wise considering only the likes of Nas and Game have released better than decent albums this year.

Mac Dre was the sh1t, he dominated the beat, he was one of the better rappers of his era, which was the prime of mainstream hip hop with the likes of Eazy, Big L, Big Daddy Kane and Rakim and so forth. But Public Enemy still shat on people!

Nowdays, I hardly listen to any mainstream hip hop, my hip hop attraction has gone south, in underground rap music which is so incredibly special, the likes of K-Rino, Ultramagnetic Mc's, South Parki Mexican and others, who dominate punk mainstream clowns like 50 Cent (shot 9 times, you know, ), Ja Rule and so on, but G-Unit have to be the worst, recent signings of Mobb Deep and Mos Def have made me truly hate them.

Mobb Deep has sold out for years now, and their beef with Jay-Z was pure jealousy. Mos Def has not signed with G-Unit, and would never do such a thing. Don't you scare me like that. ;)

BE is the album of the year, and I can't see any other artist putting up a deeper or more complete album with 11 tracks in it. I mean, it's a classic.

Mac Dre? You a Bay Area fan Helal?

I also used to listen to that shite all the time back in the day. The Click, Spice 1, 4-Tay, Richie Rich.....*sigh* good times. Now all this bubble gum rap is nothing short of nauseating, though I am guilty of going to a Young Buck concert (well not really a concert, he was just doing a show in a club) a couple weeks back. :mute:

I don't even follow hip-hop much anymore. Ever since 'Pac died it's gone wayyy downhill.... :(

LOL, I dunno why I said Mos Def, I meant M.O.P.
Mobb Deep has been a sell out, but to sign with G-Unit, he crossed the line, IMO. Although he was looking for a big label to sign with to jump start his career again, G-Unit is a huge mistake for him as it will just further more inhance his poor reputation, which has taken a battering due to Tupac and Jay Z.

Speaking of Jay Z, I seriously don't understand the hype with him, I haven't liked a single song of his, and had no idea why Nas was even bothering with a joke of rapper like Jay Z, I could understand why Jay Z was making songs when Nas' mother was sick, but did not understand why Nas even talked to a plastic like Jay Z.

Be is a good album, and you might hear people arguing that The Documentary is better considering it was pretty much a debut album. Streets Disciple is better, IMO, and by the way I've posted this, it may seem like I'm a huge Nas fan, but actually I'm not.

BE is obviously the better album, despite how much I may love Kanye or College Dropout. From one to five, it gets all five mics. The CD is a classic, as I've said before.
