We conceded one goal from open play. That penalty was fumbling by Dumfries, not our system collapsing.System shortcoming is the defensive display.
We take risks in attack, we play with lines high and there's big distance between defence and midfield. This helps us create chances in attack but it comes at a cost. It leaves our defenders exposed and unprotected to counter attacks and we basically count on opponents fuck ups or heroic last min clearances from our defenders or GK saves to get away with it. But when our opponent has the quality to make a decent counter attack it's very easy for them to create a clear cut chance. Then they usually score at their first chance and we wonder how that was possible. We blame it on bad luck but it happens way too often to consider it just a bad day. We blame it on GK for conceding every shot on target. We blame it on cbs individual mistakes. But the reality is it's a collective problem. A system problem.
As for our wastefulness in attack, it's a result of many factors. Our forwards lack the quality to finish our chances on a consistent basis. Lautaro is hot and cold many times during the season, Dzeko can only last for 6 months, Lukaku only contributes to build up play and Correa doesn't bring anything when he isn't injured. But we also lack the player who will create on his own and bring a forward in an advantageous position at opponents box. While our passing game is pretty good we lack the final pass in the attacking third. So we resort either to crosses from midfielders and wingbacks or shots from outside the box. But this kind of chances are harder to score. So while stats look good on paper in reality we create chances but we don't create clear cut chances.
We have only two ways to move forward. Either we bring the necessary quality in attack to outscore the opponent or we tighten up defence hoping attack will bring the one goal we need to win the game. Problem is first needs a lot of money while second needs a new coach and a new system with all the risks that entails.
This Spezia game cannot be an example of our system not working, I was talking about that. We dominated them completely. One mistake by the defender doesn't prove the system is not working. If our strikers or players cannot score from all that domination we had, it's more of a proof that they just cannot deliver, not that coach isn't putting them in a position to succeed.
