Think it's almost as simple as a referee not wanting to give a second penalty - and potential red - less than 20 minutes into the game, benefiting the same team in both cases.

Definitely. Refs discretion should be minimal and decisions should be made in a vacuum. That handball, imagine it’s just two silhouettes of unknown identity playing an unknown game. Then it’s a clear penalty.

I feel we weren't completely ready for this match and for Sevilla's aggressive pressing. I feel our defending isn't in control in the same way it has been before in these EL matches.

Their first goal was a good example. Godin lost his man but how easy is it to mark a forward who runs towards the goal like that? It was the midfielder who should have covered the Sevilla midfielder who got the ball in the box, then passed to the crosser who crossed => de Jong => goal. To me that was not Godin's goal, but the midfielder who lost his man 100%. Brozovic or Gagliardini, I don't know which one.

That example tells how our guys aren't paying enough attention to their role. We need to react to those runs better.
