Samir Handanovic insists the Inter captain’s armband “is not a title of nobility or a trophy. It’s a great responsibility and an honour.”

The veteran goalkeeper was given the captaincy after it was stripped from Mauro Icardi and the Nerazzurri put in a great performance to crush Rapid Vienna 4-0 in the Europa League, 5-0 on aggregate.

“Nothing can be taken for granted in modern football. The moment you step out there with the wrong attitude or underestimate the test, you change the game. It only seems simple after the final whistle,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“I think we can still improve. The squad is solid, we don’t lose possession in a banal way as much now and that makes everyone play better.

“You can see the lads who haven’t played as much this season showed themselves to be ready. We know that we need everybody if we want to go all the way this season.”

Handanovic was asked if he had changed his approach or attitude since becoming the Inter captain.

“The armband is not a title of nobility or a trophy. It is a great responsibility and at Inter an honour. We don’t need just one person wearing the armband, because we need five or six leaders who push the squad forward. It doesn’t matter who wears the armband.

“Nothing has changed for me, I keep behaving the way I did before. Of course, the behaviour of a captain is under the spotlight. If I need to, and I hope I won’t need to, I’ll step in and also do things that are required of a captain in certain situations.”

Heard he doesn't like banal .

For real though, did he really use the italian equivalent of this word?

His own words:

Handanovic keeps 100th clean sheet

Samir Handanovic kept his 100th Inter clean sheet on Thursday against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League.

Handanovic’s saves helped Inter to a 0-0 draw with Frankfurt in the first leg of their last-16 tie, on his 281st official appearance for the Nerazzurri.

The feat also came against the competitions’ highest-scoring team.

The 34-year-old joined the Beneamata in 2012 from Udinese and recently replaced Mauro Icardi as their captain.

Handa 2 LGI? :proud:

Imagine all the anger and frustration this guy has bottled up over the years. Still, the man wouldn't say shit if his mouth was full of it.

No praise for Handanovic. I saw him stand idle at a shot that went wide last night. Imagine if it were 3 meters to the right and had gone in. Why didn't he jump?

Glad to have Serie A's #1 goalkeeper and #1 defender. If we have more of these two and less of Candreva's and Vecino's then we'll be a definite scudetto contender.

There is one interesting story about Samir Handanovic.

Although he has saved Inter practically since joining Udinese in 2012, he was close to losing the first goalkeeper spot when Luciano Spalletti started on the bench.

Since former Inter coaches did not use the goalkeeper in possession, Handanovic was not known as a good goalkeeper in the game, so he was given the command of Spalletti to fix it if he wants to stay on Inter's goal.

In just over 2.5 years - Handanovic was the average goalkeeper in the game to become one of the best.

That best shows yesterday's derby against Milan.
He was calm, secure in his possession and resilient to the high pressure of the opponent, and he was involved in building an attack and leaving Inter defenses.

Instead of a weak spot, he became an integral part of the game and continued to be the key man of Inter.

I remember that 'adventure' in our own goal in that Derby win where Guarin scored the only goal. We almost conceded by ourselves before the ball moved forward and then Guarin just banged it in  One of the latest high/low moments I remember in derbies.

Inactive thread = getting shit done, consistently. Props.

Earns less than half what Icardi earns btw. Deserves one trophy at the very least.

Lol heres the Icardi brigade.... My bad I read he was on like 50k a week. Whatever he earns, out most respect. Icardi maybe the best serie a striker last 2 seasons but Handas been the best keeper last 5 years. In terms of consistency anyway. Whatever his reasons for sticking around, im greatful as fuck.
