I miss Facchetti at Inter
Let me just begin to say that I love the club and its president. I also think Mancini is the right coach for Inter, and that he is a young coach, with lots of potential, that still should be allowed to learn from mistakes. I do believe Inter will win the scudetto this year, and will also do well in the cl. On the other hand I do think that Inter lacks leadership and management skills, which at some point have to be solved, if Inter wants to remain among the top European teams, without Moratti using up all of his fortune.
I know it is old news, but this latest development with the Adriano-saga, has just shown that Inter just keep on making the same mistakes, even though they now have such a strong squad, that they are able to win almost every time they take to the pitch no matter what they do. On the one hand controversy is just such a large part of being a fan of Inter in the Massimo Moratti era, and I would probably start to miss it if it went away, but sometimes it just frustrates me, and I have to vent.
I think it is a mistake to let Adriano go now. You really can't blame him for wanting to leave after Mancini has practically kicked him out. A player like Adriano, with such an amazing talent, shouldn't spend a year on loan with a team like Parma, at the age of 25. He shouldn’t be behind a player like Cruz in the pecking order. Cruz is a loyal and capable player, but he has reached his potential, and Adriano has the potential to be a legend. It's a slap in the face. It doesn't matter that he has played horrible for some time. Either you get rid of the guy, or you treat the guy like you believe in him. Otherwise he is just a waste of money each time you send him a pay check and let him sit next to Moratti in the stands, without the chance to prove himself.
In the past I have been really tired of Adriano acting like an idiot and not trying to live up to his potential. I am aware that the player’s loyalty towards Inter is not any greater than Vieri's or Ronaldo's. If he was allowed to join Milan he would not hesitate, and he will never be one of my favourite players at Inter. I would have understood if Inter decided to sell the player a couple of months ago, but lately Adriano has expressed a wish to be more humble and work harder. At the same time Inter (Moratti) had decided to give the guy one last chance. Then suddenly it becomes apparent that it was only Moratti, and not Mancini, that wanted to give the player one more chance, and then a week before the transfer deadline, they decide they want to loan the guy out as sort of a compromise. It is just amazing to me that a club of Inters size can be managed in this way. It is embarrassingly unprofessional. Not only will the prize of the player drop, but the squad will be unsettled in a period where the season has started. Players from other clubs will be less interested in joining the club, and at the same time the management of Inter will once again show the world, that at Inter you never know who the real boss is. Is it Moratti or Mancini or maybe one of the Argentinean players? It seems that each individual at the club (players, coach, management and president) just fight each other for power, and just barely tolerate each others presence in the club. Nobody works together to serve a greater good. They just want to look good and achieve glory for themselves. When the team wins they are truly an amazing team and everything works perfectly, but you can see the problems arising when the going gets tough. They don’t want to fight for each other. The defence does what it can to stop the opponent from scoring, and the offence does what it can to score a goal, but none of them take it upon themselves to help their team-mates. They just do their own jobs on the pitch.
Good old Moratti, who just wants to experience a successful side that wins trophies and can live up to his father’s reputation, does everything he can for the club. I really feel sorry for him sometimes, because he uses a lot of money, time and effort on the club, and mostly he just gets irritating reporters who wants to destroy his club to sell newspapers, and fans who wants to throw him out if the team loses a couple of games. The players he pays and nurtures don’t give him much. They are mostly just spoiled young brats with a passion for money and glory. The coaches he has paid and given the chance to be leaders of a great team, only respects his money.
The fans (also me) constantly want new star players, and to sell players who haven’t played well for a couple of matches. That is of course not the answer. Inter have great players with fantastic potential. What Moratti, the fans and Inter really needs is a guy like Facchetti. Inter need a guy with a strong personality, with reputation, leadership and knowledge about football. A guy that will not accept anyone at the club that doesn’t understand, that the only way glory is achieved, is by working for the greater good of the team. A person who can make sure that every individual at the club know that if you step outside the line repeatedly, then you are out of the club. If you don't want to be part of a team, and only want to work for yourself and you’re next contract, then you are not wanted at the club, no matter how many goals you score, or how many tackles you make. In every part of life mistakes are made and should be forgiven, but if you repeatedly and intentionally makes the same mistakes, and you are damaging the club, then you should be removed from the organisation, no matter who you are. At the same time only players that will contribute on both a footballing level as well as on a team spirit level, should be allowed to join the club. Primadonnas are a part of football, and if you want to win you have to accept difficult players at the club, but they have to know that they do not run things. They are only players, and they should respect team-mates, the coach, the president and most importantly the club. You can’t have a successful team that consists of people who doesn’t like each other and the boss of the team (the coach). At Milan they have Galliani, who I despise, but at the same time I know how important he is for them. At Juventus they had Moggi, who had the same role, but couldn’t fill the role without cheating. At Arsenal and Man Utd they have Wenger and Ferguson. At Chelsea they have problems, because Abramovich doesn’t seem to be interested in letting Mourinho take this role, and therefore has let Frank Arnesen have too much power. At Real they lack this person just as Inter do. At Barcelona it seems to me that Laporta and Beguiristan together fills the role.
Mancini has the potential of being a great coach, but he has to work on his management skills. You can't be a great coach unless you are a leader, and my guess is that Mancini wouldn't have much respect from the squad if it wasn't for Mihajlovic, and the fact that he chooses the line-up for each match. He seems to be creating more problems among the players than he is solving. He shouldn’t play favourites or be part of cliques like he has a tendency to do. Mancini is still too inexperienced to fill the role, and he needs somebody more experienced to control him, the players and the club. Branca would be a joke in this role. Maybe Figo is a possibility, even though he has only been at the club for a very short time. But my guess is he will choose money (Major league soccer) or maybe to go home to Portugal instead, and I wouldn’t blame him, because it is a very big responsibility. It is not a job, it is a life. You can’t just take the role and then leave after 2 or 3 years. You have to create consistency for the club. No matter which players and which coach is at the club, you have to be there to make sure everybody understands what Inter is about, and what rules, laws and philosophies apply at the club. You have to show the players that if, and only if, they respect the club, will they be rewarded.
If we could get the right man to take over after Facchetti, I think it would become increasingly boring to be a fan of Inter, because the club would win, but without the drama of a lot of big signings each years and unrest among players. But maybe the players would finally understand that the shirt they wear is a symbol of a legendary institution, which was born before their grandparents, and will create passion, sorrow and pain a long while after the day that they find themselves at the local nursing home, having to be assisted by a nurse to go to the toilet.
I miss Facchetti at Inter.
