Now that I have some time, I will give my long-standing opinion of Montoya. Basically, Montoya is the definition of a squad player - a guy who will fill in and add some depth and coverage to the squad. However, the mistake we made was that we neglected to take into account that he is Barcelona's squad player - a guy who was raised and trained by Barcelona, to add some depth and coverage to Barcelona.
Despite having no standout abilities, Montoya is a la Masia product. Having also trained and played alongside world class players at the Camp Nou for years means that of course, Montoya is a capable and tidy player. But at Barcelona, the guy just has to act as a rebounding board for the more talented players to play off and be effective. Perhaps when Messi needs that extra yard of space, he can pass to Montoya and expect a neat pass straight back, which gives him just that extra room required to beat the defender. However, Inter is a place where attacking talent and passing comes to die. At Inter, if you're an attacking player, you need to do it all by yourself in spite of everyone, and I mean everyone, because your teammates and your coach sure as fuck are not going to help you. Perhaps this is why Guarin, a singularly terrible footballer, has found some level of 'success' and 'consistency' in his career here at Inter, because he will try to do everything himself, in spite of everyone, and with the sheer amount of times that he tries, he does succeed from time to time with a goal. Montoya on the other hand, was very predictably, going to fail in this regard. I said when we first signed him that it was a pointless transfer because at Inter, a rebounding board who best operates as a vessel for hyper-talented individuals to utilise, within a hyper-attacking unit, is fucking worthless.
