I've never doubted Mazzarri. The squad this year has improved a great deal from last season, our defensive game is what needed the most improving and I think it has been corrected. Still a long way to go, but I have no doubt we won't see a repeat of last season.

On another note, Kovacic & Icardi have jumped in performance and quality since they both arrived. This is extremely encouraging.

The problem with Mazzari is that he can't make his team play anything other than counterattack. Look at majority of our goals today, there was almost always space behind opponents that we exploited with pace.

Torino for example rarely gave us that luxury, and sat back deeply, and we were found out.

Of the almost 40 goals we conceded last season, you can definitely count on more than half of those coming from our poor ability to defend. We conceded over 15 of those goals just from dead ball situations. We were just plain shit at defending from corners and free kicks.

edit: Can Vitomins or DataInter (or whatever his name is) provide stats on the goals we conceded last season ? I'll eat my shoe if at least 15 of them weren't from corners/free kicks.

We actually play them as our two holding midfield against Torino, but Medel alone provide a better cover!

I`m wondering why hasnt M`Villa played?

I believe that Medel is the type of player Mazzarri wanted for that position and now it's been two games where Medel did his job very solid. Both M'vila and Medel are also capable of playing a CM next to a DM, but it's okay for me if M'vila becomes the second DM and Kuz the third (which would make Krhin a CM?).

Hopefully M'vila plays in EL and not Medel.

Based on what ? Total goals conceded ?! So what ? The point is we conceded a large amount of goals due to some blatantly stupid and amateurish defending. As I said somewhere earlier, we conceded 15+ goals just from extremely poor defending at corners and free kicks. When you look at the big picture, we dropped an unforgivable amount of points because of our inability to defend. Had we been better defensively, we would've been 10-15 points better off. And rather than conceding 40 goals, we would've conceded 20-25 goals ! Now that's a massive difference.

If you don't think we had problems in our defensive game, then you must've been watching the wrong team. We coughed up leads too easily and often fell behind in games. We struggled to hold leads.
