We Are Closer To Inter - Aquilani Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani believes his team has narrowed the gap with Inter after this summer's transfer dealings.
After the Scudetto race of last year and this summer's transfer dealings, the big question on many Italian fans' minds is: is the difference between Inter and Roma still as large as last season? No, at least that's what Alberto Aquilani thinks about it. The Roman midfielder believes the difference is smaller after the various purchases made by the Giallorossi so far.
His reasoning behind it is uncomplicated: "The team is unchanged with respect to last year, apart from the sale of Chivu," he said, "and some important players have arrived. So if even last year we were not very inferior to them then this year the difference will be even less."
In a few days there will be time to talk about it again, as there will be a new Italian Supercup final between the two sides. After the debacle of last year (Roma lost the game 4-3 in extra time after leading 3-0), Aquilani is seeking redemption: "For me it brings back both sweet and sour memories. At the end of the first half [in which he scored twice], I was the happiest person in the world, while at the end of it I was the saddest.
"If we had won it would have been a double satisfaction for me. Now we gave a great chance for redemption and that experience can serve us."
Experiences. Despite his young age, Aquilani has already had a lot of them. But now it's time for him to show his true worth: "This is an important year for me, I have reached 23 years of age and I have to show my worth to the fullest: it will be a decisive season."
A long-term objective? To become the new heir to home-grown golden boys Totti and De Rossi: "My hope is to stay here at Roma. I hope to able to show my worth here."

We'll See If Inter Are The Strongest - Conti Bruno Conti claimed he is not sure whether Inter are indeed the leading team in Italy.
The challenge between Inter and Roma has already begun. Even though, in reality, it probably never ended. Bruno Conti added the latest chapter in this rivalry. The 1982 World Champion is not entirely sure that the Nerazzurri are the leading team in Italy.
"Let other people judge who is the strongest team," the current Roma sporting director said in a radio interview, "we should think exclusively about games on the pitch, not about the calendar, nor anything else, because on the 19th we already have the Supercoppa."
The Roma manager claimed he is confident ahead of next season: "We have bought motivated players who want to fit into Spalletti's idea of football and with whom we will carry on this project. We think we have a group of players which can give us satisfactions and there is still time to evaluate the squad and every other situation. The transfer market is still open, we'll see if there's still anything we can complete."
On the latest contract renewals planned, he revealed: "Very soon it will be the turn of Aquilani and De Rossi."

Inter Are Not Stronger Than Us - Conti The Roma Director believes in the Giallorossi's qualities and is sure that the team will give many satisfactions to the fans this season.
Bruno Conti is relishing the Italian Super Cup trophy match in program next week between Roma and Inter, with the Giallorossi wanting to avenge last year's incredible defeat against the Nerazzurri.
However, according to Conti, this season the Capital city side does not feel inferior to Roberto Mancini's squad and will make sure to prove this on the pitch.
"Inter is the strongest? Let's let others judge that," he said. "In these two years we have tried to confirm the most important players and renew the most important contracts.
"Now we must think about the contracts of Aquilani and De Rossi," he continued, "We have signed motivated players who want to be part of Spalletti's work and with whom we want to move forward."
"We don't want to think about anything else except the pitch, because on the 19th of August we have the Super Cup.
"We believe that we have a group which can reward us with satisfactions and then there's still time to evaluate the squad and every situation.
"The market is open, we shall see with Spalletti if there's something to complete," concluded the former Roma player.
