This is why Cairo is asking for Marotta`s resignation

Cairo: 'Agnelli and Marotta negotiated both sides'

Torino President Urbano Cairo accuses Juventus and Inter of sabotaging the Lega Serie A talks with investment funds while secretly also preparing the Super League.

While Cairo spoke to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, he tied together the fact Agnelli was one of the founding figures behind the Super League with his role in negotiating the Lega Serie A deal to bring in outside funds. That was a project that seemed to be complete before some clubs suddenly turned against it.

“The Super League is an attack on the collective interest of Italian football,” said Cairo.
“Three clubs, Juve, Inter and Milan, thought exclusively about their economic health, their interests. They were not remotely concerned with the needs and concerns of other clubs.
“These are clubs that regularly pay their wages, who work hard and plan their activities with a good conscience. I do not think these 12 clubs, who may well have been destined to become 15, are financially virtuous. Quite the opposite.
The project that planned to bring funds and a media company into the Lega Serie A was based on €1.7-1.8 billion, money that would’ve gone to everyone.
“Agnelli was part of the internal committee that was negotiating with the funds, and therefore had a very important role in the talks.

“The committee of five, which was created on October 13 2020, had been delegated to control the talks by all the other clubs.
“Suddenly, a change of scene, despite the vote from the assembly that supported the funds: Agnelli and the Inter owners suddenly distance themselves from the idea of the funds. Now we know why.
“We now come to discover that there were these negotiations between 12 European clubs, all of them heavily in debt, with secret meetings between Agnelli and Florentino Perez.
“This is unfair competition, this is lying, this is bad faith. You are delegated by the Serie A clubs to negotiate on their behalf and meanwhile are negotiating on another front to work out your own financial problems by damaging the clubs who gave you the mandate?”

Cairo also had stern words for Inter director Beppe Marotta.
“He is a Federal Counsellor, delegated to represent Serie A. He therefore has to resign. Agnelli left the ECA. I expect Marotta to do the same with the FIGC.

“The same goes for Milan President Paolo Scaroni, who at least was consistent with regards to the Lega Serie A funds, as he continued to support them. He too has to resign as a Lega counsellor.
“I admire Scaroni, but he has to take a step back.”

There's no official announcement from the club yet. As soon as there is one we will.

I don't quite get why this thread should be locked when Inter announces the resignation. I don't get why it should be locked even when the Super League is officially shut down / suspended / whatever. This topic will continue to live inside the football world for sure. It has lived there for over 20 years.

I completely agree with Cairo. The case is absolutely like he states it.

Marotta really got burnt hard here unfortunately. Basically because of Steven Zhang being a puppy and not understanding any-fucking-thing.

Come on, you don't believe that.

Marotta definitely was involved in the ESL decision. That's what he was hired to do.

I think this is my new all-time favorite football related quote. From Agnelli:

"Super League simulates what young people do on digital platforms in competition with Call of Duty or Fortnite."

My initial reaction was that this way Zhangs were able to finance Inter and Marotta is only the CEO executing orders from the owners.

Please can someone explain how this thing is related to NFL or do you have any link to an article that explains it? Secondly, how come the NFL were successful with their own? Weren't there any backlashes to stop it during their own? What were the reprcussions to the entire sport after the formation of NFL?
And is American football now working fine?

A CEO is an executive director. Shit goes sour, he is legally liable as are the shareholders.

In terms of blame game or outrage, it is fairly obvious here.

The ones to get the most blame (rightfully) are
- Real Madrid
- Juventus
- Manchester United
- Liverpool

They are the ones leading this, at the forefront of it. Perez is the face of the entire thing, and Agnelli an instigator and a prime culprit.

Beyond the above 4, the next ones to face the brunt are
- Manchester City
- Chelsea
- Barcelona
- Arsenal
- Tottenham Hotspur

They are tier 2 primarily due to their wide reach and fan base, on account of being English. Barcelona also due to their massive base, and also for a (bullshit) holier than thou attitude.

The last to face the brunt are
- Internazionale
- AC Milan
- Atletico Madrid

These are the clubs who were invited to join it, and not the leaders behind the move. And after all, would you rationally turn down the prospect that helps you cement your position in the premium club category.

Inter should just stay quiet about the entire thing, and just not appear to be supportive of Agnelli as he tries to save his face.

Milan with Gazidis and Singer were part of it. Gazidis was part of this from his Arsenal days, wouldn't be surprised if he was hired to give Milan a seat on this table.

Also, no point in absolving our cunts from blame. It's a Dirty Dozen. They can all go fuck themselves. Suning needs to get the fuck out and we need an owner that understands what the fuck is going around.

And football needs a complete overhaul, starting from the idiots from the European Union and all the governments, all the federations, including UEFA and FIFA and owning a club shouldn't give you absolute power, it should be clear that they're merely custodians and not in it for profit. Limit the professionalism status of the sport in order to save it. Otherwise, throw around as many Superleagues as you want, because in 20 years that's going to be the reality if we continue on this rotten path.

Nah, City and Chelsea were definitely not tier 2 culprits. They didn't really needed this and were first ones to back out. They have it easy with UEFA.

Also I'd add Arsenal to the first tier as Kroenke surely were immediately when told about this project. Those yankee owners in addition to Perez + Agnelli were the main actors in this one, I'm pretty sure of that.

Yeah. It's reported Chelsea were the last to join and the first to leave even though City announced it first. Milan were also a lot more involved in this. Gazidis was one of the few club officials, along with Perez and Agnelli, who talked publicly about it.

At least we were the first Italian club to leave. It's something. :D

this super league will happen, sooner or later

the difference is, that next time nobody will invite inter to it, because in next 10 years we will be as rich and relevant as lazio

if these league would start before 2002 crisis, half of those teams would be italian, not some fucken tottenham or city

i dont need resignation from agnelli, marotta etc. its not like lotito or delaurentis are better.

i want to hear a solid plan how to stop EPL/Bundes and make serie a better.

Exactly. The Premier league is already a superleague. The rights for serie a are going down and down and will get lower when Ronaldo leaves. This was a chance for the top 3 Italian teams to stay alive in the European sphere. Italian teams do shit year in year out, it's national team is hopefully bouncing back but was at its lowest point ever 2 years ago, Calcio is in crisis.

the new champions league format seems weird to me:

“Under the new format, teams will play four matches more than is currently the case. They will no longer play three opponents twice, home and away, but will instead face fixtures against ten different teams, half of them at home and half of them away.”

I thought it was going to be 6 teams in a group stage, with 10 matches (5 home 5 away). Sounds like they're doing something very different...

Well this put a dour fucking note on what is most likely a scudetto winning season. As if covid and the complete lack of fans wasn’t enough of a downer. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be happy for the players and coaches if they bring it on home (and obviously I’ll be happy as well) but what a bad taste this leaves in the mouth. Like three different kinds of animal piss blended up with my favourite fruits.

Look who put the nail in the coffin to this: Abramovich and Arab owners of City/PSG.

That will tell you about the future of football.

Lmfaoooooo. What the actual fuck? Yeah let arab oil money control the sport so it doesn't get "Americanized".

I didn't the know the "fans" were actually a small handful of Saudis and Russians.
