Luis, it was a personal thing actually. I think it was effected by the fact that Brazil was having good time as of late, so most people would take Pele as a greater player. But for me personally, it was his character that does it for me.

But you are right, Fifa said both were co no.1 in the player of the century award. But I understand if a person like you who saw 86 first-hand will think Maradona is greater.

And the Pele thing, I think he has the right to criticize his own team if he wants. In fact, I respect that because he isn't just a conformist. He knew that his views won't be liked and could affect his stature, but he said what he thought.

I missed on all the fun on this topic! To be honest, all the soccer fans that I run into don't have a Pele vs. Maradona debate, because it's settled, Pele is the better one.

When was it settled? I see Diego better that Pele. Diego played with the evolving football tougher defences and Pele played when the world had just come from World Wars and everyone was regrouping, footballing nations were developing their styles, football was ultra attacking in Pele's time you would see 3 defenders max!
Different times different talent but I rate Diego Higher. I love Pele he is a jem but Maradona brings personality to the game, whether he cheated at that time against England which as he catanha said he asked the Enlgish player whether he would admit and did not get a response. FIFA said that both were the best players of all time and to me it is prudent to say so.

This debate will neve be settled.
