Zanetti is a good dribbler. He doesn't launch many attacks or give killer passes cos he doesn't have the vision for that. But he is very good in getting past a few players and relieving the pressure on teammates.

Why not play Cambiasso - Zanetti - Vieira then ?

Why risk loosing the space here and then, when they could easily stay compact and do without it? If Zanetti is rarelly attacking, and the center one in this cas Cambiasso, according to you is attacking more, why not go with a well known schema and do it as it should be done. Cambiasso and Vieria on the sides, at times supproting attack, and Zanetti in the middle, thinking mostly about the defense ?

When we used JZ-Cuchu-Viera lineup(which was 2 yrs ago), Materazzi was our left defender, and he needed adaquate cover from wingers. Since Maxwell wasn't able to provide enough cover, it was JZ who was looking after Materazzi (and I agreed with Mancini's tactic since JZ is experience of stopping wingers.)

When we first used 4-3-1-2 tactic, I'd put roles in this way, which is more like a tilted diamond formation.

As for question of who covered Maicon, normally Viera and Cordoba did. Our defense was not a flat line. Cordoba was covering alot of empty spots with his speed, while Materazzi was staying little behind. JZ rarely covered for Maicon.

JZ did take Vieira's role last year (when Samuel was fit and Maxwell improved) while Cuchu was taking DM spot, but there were lots of switching roles last year since half of our midfielder ended up injured. I think this is where confusion is arising. Luka is more focused on our formation last season whereas cloudq is mentioning on a season before that.

It seems very likely that Cambiasso will be very vital for Jose, and with Lampard coming, and Vieira and Zanetti left in the club, Cambi can play only as deffensive playmaker(That doesn't mean it can't go other way, but this is more probable).

If this logic is right, there would be absolutely no point of signing Diarra. If Jose could manage to pay this much, he would take 10 Mil and pay for Quaresma te whole 40 Mil.
