yeah, but c'est la vie. It doesnt. The away goal rule - as it was previously implemented - was fucking unfair anyway, one team gets 90m to score an away goal, the other gets 120m (as eliminated us once)
The same way one team has 120m home advantage while the other has 90m right now.

I'm interested beating Juve's 102 points.

Rather we see those random names on the bench actually get minutes. The Canadian guy getting a shot. If he sucks sell or loan him next season

Stop giving minutes to zombies that will leave this summer

Bisseck should start the remaining games. See if Pavard can play in the middle. Tho when this guy fks up he really fks up

as i said, off the top of my head, inter only suffered from that rule, rather than benefitted!

To keep it as short as possible, we are on the level as this Atletico.
People should really internalize this. Atletico is not a bad team. They had a meh first game, and we had a meh second game. Both Atletico and Inter are probably a top10 team in Europe right now.

Here is to hoping we can still be top10 the next few seasons. Shame the CL format has changed

The format change is a great point. It should kinda help us in some ways because of our seeding position etc.. I don't know how seeding works in the new format, i assume it's still a thing. We should in principle face like 4 easy teams, 2 somewhat challenging teams and 2 hard teams and I'd expect us to at least make the first knock out stage

I dont really disagree, but (serious question rather than rhetorical) do Atletico really count as a big european team atm?
They went out bottom of their CL group last year, they're 14 points off the pace of La Liga which is pretty comparable to where Juve/Milan are in relation to us...

Like, 4th place in La Liga beat the clear dominant club in Serie A. Isn't this just outright a tragedy?
Liverpool 2020. That Atletico was probably 20 points below Madrid and Liverpool killed it in EPL and that's with Liverpool having great performances in CL and winning it the previous season. That's just how football and CL is.

It's quite interesting how similar our situation with Liverpool that year. Both killed it in the league, reached final the previous season, yet getting eliminated by Atletico. After years of not qualifying to CL and 2 years of an absolute embarrassment of CL campaign by Conte, this is not a bitter pill to swallow when looking at the bigger picture.

We needed to progress through R16. That hurts us in the long run. I'm afraid this Scudetto run could be the last one in a while. I don't think we are winning a 21st Scudetto next season.

Not sure I'd go that far. Obviously this season's Napoli showed full well that a runaway Scudetto guarantees shit the following season (of course, ADL ran off the manager of that team and hired a clown to replace him...) but there's no reason we shouldn't have every opportunity to go into next year with full expectation to play for the Scudetto and be favorites to win it. The following season where the CWC threatens to shorten our summer, different matter...

I do think anybody who thinks "we got the second star, we can relax for a bit" is fooling themselves. We won the Scudetto in 2021, how did people react the following year when we narrowly lost to Milan? Angrily, of course. Almost always, if we don't win the Scudetto, one of our two rivals does. Nobody would say "we won it last year, relax". We should be going for three-in-four this year. Legacies are established by stacking Scudetti wins on top of each other. This year has been wonderful...by the time next season begins, forget this season. It's all in for a new Scudetto chase.

We benefited from it against Valencia in 02/03 when we won home leg 1-0 and then lost the away leg 2-1.

did that match go to extra time? Im not talking about away goals in general, but specifically 'away goals still count in extra time'

3 losses all season, and 2 of them have knocked the team out of the cup competitions. Such a strange season.

Ah no, it didn't go extra time because of the away goal.

Even if we had beaten Atletico, we couldn't go past City, Real, Bayern, PSG, etc. We're definitely not a top 3 side in Europe.
not gonna say we would win, but we could play with those teams, you cant play against this bully football

Either you're the most blatant Milan troll alive, or you let them live rent free in your head. They're 15 points behind us with a zero sum manager and an illegal sale investigation. Let it go.

How do you not think Barella is worth 50M? Not the point of your post, but still.

I'm just speaking on the state of the team after our exit tbh and comparing our situation. For me Barella is a player we should absolutely never sell so he never crossed my mind. I'm just saying that we are not setup the best financially and so I'm proud of where we are today. I simply wanted to make the point that sure we signed more experienced players but going young like what milan did isn't the way clearly either. Doesn't win you shit. At least we have the title.

Bottom line is, we can cry all day that Atletico isn't 'elite' and has all homegrown players but take a look at their wage bill Griezmann and Oblak alone probably earn more than our entire starting 11 combined.

Also don't agree that we couldn't go past city, madrid etc. I think we underestimated Atletico and at home on their game Atletico could've beaten any of those sides too. Atletico is arguably the most annoying team we could've faced. They'll fight their ases off for 120 minutes more than any of the other teams we would've faced. We were 2-0 up, no matter how you cut it or slice it - we threw away the tie.

Anyways, better luck to us next season proud of the boys and hopefully we come back stronger <3

Let's wait until the summer ends to continue this discussion. I'm sure one of the starters is gone.

No comment on the rest of the post, but from a quick check, it seems like Griezzman makes less than Lautaro possibly. As far as I can see he's 7m euros net at the moment.

That's why luck plays a huge factor in cup competitions than the league. We were very unlucky with the injuries and lack of depth which showed up in the wrong game of the season.

On a side note, I can tell you that this will be Atletico Madrid's toughest and most suffering encounter in the CL this year even if they get knocked out. They'll never forget it.

The game would have gone in different situation if the away goal rule existed.

The same rule that knocked us out multiple times in the past, also knocked out us out this time with its absence.
