TBH It was obviously going to happen. He's 70mil all plus valenza with a (in principle) ready made replacement in Vicario lined up.

Dont get me wrong, I dont fully agree with that - Onana adds so much passing and ability to our backline that he does a lot more than a pure GK, I Dont know anything about Vicario.

Problem is that Vicario may be talented but he has zero exposure at the top level.

He may turn out like Frey where Inter was his school rather than his career. He was always a solid GK but he settled at being a good GK for teams that didn't amount to much.

Other targets over the years as potential Handanovic replacements were Lafont (where is he?), Dragowski (not consistent), Skorupski (not young), Cragno (backup now) and a few others that also never amounted to much. Not because they're bad, but because they need top level exposure. And we need someone ready.

Handanovic was a national team starter, played in Europe with Udinese and was acknowledged as the best GK in Italy. Vicario is hardly regarded as a top 5 GK in Italy. He may become the best, but it's a gamble.

Onana, with all his pazza mentality and faults, came as the GK of a perennial championship winning side at Ajax with deep European runs since his first season and was also the national team GK. He fit the bill on paper. Vicario as his potential replacement does not.

We should be looking at guys like Unai Simon, Mendy (not a fan) or Diogo Costa but we're not doing that obviously. Which means we shouldn't be spending more on a GK until we're ready to go for such a guy. We should be okay with letting Vicario go to Fiorentina and spending more later if he maintains a high level.

Not a huge fan of most players we're after for the GK position. For either starting or backup role.

I have no idea why we are not after Simon. He would be just the type we need, which is good with his feet. And his price is similar to Vicario... The guy is probably the most underrated gk right now.

Unai was Spain's starting GK at WC right? I remember that guy to be a trainwreck, that's probably why.

Nah, Simon would cost 50-70m depending on market mood.

spending money we don't have on a GK makes no sense until we sell Onana which it doesn't seem like offers are coming.

Onana, Barella, Bastoni, DiMarco and Lautaro unless it's a record breaking transfer are not for sale at any price after July 1st. Let's get real. After that point tis going to be impossible to replace them

I mean dropping 20m on a GK when we have a top one that no offer has come for yet.... is a massive risk.

we patch the team with youth players and guys out on loan

only starter that currently needs to be replaced is Lukaku/Dzeko. The 10 remaining starters are all still here. Make sure to lock down Cahla, Barella, Dimarco and Bastoni.

The situation isn't half as bad as people are making it out to be. We have 0 bench options..... what's new? Our bench 2 seasons ago was a fking joke and last season was even worse. Why not just have 8 U23 players there and hope one of them isn't shit.

ESPN says Onana has a 40m release clause, is there any truth to that?
