Thohir's brilliant plan for the following season was free agents and "smart purchases". And this was the main reason we had signed Banega, Erkin and Ansaldi before June. Ausilio knew he didn't have much money to spend so he had to be quick. This is what Thohir had said on May 2016:

Rolando and Poli were nothing special but definitely should've been signed as squad players. They were better than the likes of Kuzmanovic, Gargano, Murillo, Vidic, Campagnaro etc and they would've saved us a lot of money.

We have only (except 2-3 players) squad players.
We don't (didn't) need more players for the bench. We need starters, winners. That's our problem.

Wouldn't it be nice if Milan gets a CL spot but won't be able to play CL because of not following UEFA rules?

That excuse is hardly convincing, buddy. Ansaldi was far from free. The cost was Laxalt AND 7m. That money was just enough to redeem Telles. We simply didnt trust Telles and thought Ansaldi+Erkin were better.
