Arabic Sweets (Halwa)

Hey you thieves, that's Greek :D:D:D

In Greece and Cyprus we have the:
-souvlakia(similar to kebab)
-gyros, which can be made of different meats, and it's really tasty

And in Cyprus we have the Souvla, which is probably the best food ever :p It's meat, oh I can't say it with words!!! I'm hungry now :D:D:D

In arabic countries there is "muharram" now..so In iran we got tasooa ashoora time..

anyway...I don't wanna post the history...just search for Imam Hossein and Karbala at wikipedia and you will know the deal..

The whole tasooa ashoora thing is actually a mourning time, but in the last years it has turned more into some sort of carnival where young boys go out for dragging girls and having fun, meal is served, etc.
It's a pretty "fun" time now in Iran as picking up girls is really easy...

The reason I don't wanna post much about the reasons behind it, is that the whole thing is extremely complicated and you need to know some sort of background info etc. and I neither have the time now nor I really feel after it. :D

but hey...a little homework...research on the subjects above if you care.

England: :D :depress:

The culture of England is sometimes difficult to separate clearly from the culture of the United Kingdom, so influential has English culture been on the cultures of the British Isles and, on the other hand, given the extent to which other cultures have influenced life in England.

Cuisine

England being the first industrialised country in the world, urbanised workers were in many cases cut off from regional food traditions. As a result, English cuisine has suffered from a widespread image of blandness and lack of distinctiveness. The openness of English diners to exotic dishes has also meant that English cooking does not enjoy as high a profile as other nations' culinary traditions. More recently, a new style of cooking called Modern British has emerged that combines traditional British ingredients with foreign culinary influences.
The Full English breakfast remains an enduring tradition for many, despite the increasing popularity of the continental-style breakfast, or no breakfast at all, for busy workers. Tea and beer are typical drinks. Cider is produced in the West Country, and the south of England has seen the reintroduction of vineyards producing high quality white wine on a comparatively small scale.

Folklore

English folklore is the folk tradition which has evolved in England over a number of centuries. Some English legends can be traced back to their roots, even as far as before the Roman invasion of Britain, while the origin of others is fairly uncertain or disputed. England abounds with folklore, in all forms, from such obvious manifestations as the traditional semi-mystical Arthurian legends and semi-historical Robin Hood tales, to contemporary urban myths and facets of cryptozoology such as the Beast of Bodmin Moor.
Morris dance and related practices such as the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance preserve old English folk traditions, as do Mummers Plays. The utopian vision of a traditional England is sometimes referred to as Merry England.
English mythology is no longer widely believed. Whereas some folklore legends were formerly believed nationally across the whole of England, most can generally be divided into regional areas of England.

Heritage

Stonehenge holds an iconic place in the culture of England. Other built structures like cathedrals and parish churches are associated with a sense of Englishness. The English country house and the lifestyle associated for centuries with an élite minority now forms an interest among many people in England as typified by visits to properties managed by English Heritage or the National Trust.
Landscape gardening as developed by Capability Brown set an international trend for the English garden. Gardening and visiting gardens are also a facet of the culture of England for many people.

  • List of National Trust properties in England
Religion

The Church of England functions as the established church in England. Other churches which have started in England include the Methodist church, the Quakers and the Salvation Army.
See also Religion in the United Kingdom.

Sport and leisure

Cricket and football are generally considered the national games. However Rugby becomes increasingly popular and currently is more popular than its rival cricket.

Amazing...

I don't know what are you talking about. Maybe you misunderstood, I think what you are talking about is stuff like baklava, those are Lebanese sweet, and normally Lebanese cuisine is similar to Mediterranean (Turkish, Greek, Southern Italian.)

What I was talking about is mainly in the Gulf states. It's totally different, and uses ingredients found in the area, so I doubt it's greek. If its origin is from outside, then it will only be either Persian or Indian.

:D Ay Khoda indeed, specially the northerns!

About that Island Fabio, it is a very ambitious indeed. If I get it correctly, they would dump sand in large quantities (sand is the only thing more abundant than oil in the gulf) on the sea to create an aritifical island.

Not that it hasn't been done before, but the scale of this one is pretty large.

...an oppressed and noble nation... It would be difficult, perhaps, to find the annals of a nation less stained with crimes than the Armenians, whose virtues have been those of peace, and their vices those of compulsion.
But whatever may have been their destiny... their country must ever be one of the most interesting on the globe; and perhaps their language only requires to be more studied to become more attractive.

Here's a simplified version about life in Canada

- The beautiful landscapes
-the massive snowstorms and cold snaps in the winter
- the national sport ( Ice Hockey)
-famous foods, poutine, maple syrup, pancakes etc.
- its modern cities such as Toronto ( that just happens to be considered the twin city of Milan  )

But whats really unique about Canada, is seeing people from different cultures and races, coming together to create a vast muticultural society.

Well, there is the palm jumeirah, palm deira and plam jebel ali. All of them are islands in the shape of a plam that have complexes, malls, etc etc, its like an outer city within a city. The biggest one will have to be The world, which is basically, the world atlas built in islands. Pretty cool. All these are almost done.

I dunno how true this is, but, a saw a draft of an underwater hotel!! Hydropalace or somethin. Dunno if that concept has been implemented yet though.

Are you talking figuratively or literaly? Sand is free there, at least in Saudi. You just drive outside the city for 5 min, then you can have all the sand in the world! :D

No i mean it...Sand prices used for construction have sky rocketed in Bahrain...Now we have to import it from Saudi..:D

I guess its normal considering we are a small Isalnd and reclaiming land for at least 3 additional islands..

Baklawa and halwa, if you spell it this way in English, have Greek origins ;)

Halwa comes from the North of Greece, Macedonia, which is close to Salonika... Baklawa are Greek island's stuff... But they are quite different, so each country claims it as theirs ;) :p

And Lebanese are the biggest "thieves" in the history of cuisine!!!!

Pitta, which is Greek and Cypriot(Greeks have small, we have big). It's some sort of bread...Really good and you put souvlakia and gyros inside, and salads etc etc :D

Another thing, which for us Cypriots is the best product, and first made here, and was stuck here for ages until the world ever tasted it... That is halloumi. Some sort of cheese. It's white and you can eat it right away, or you can grill it or fry it in pans!!! Really worth to taste it...

Now that you reminded me of a desert, I have a joke!!! I'm too tired to go to the Jokes thread, and since I'm already here :D:D:D

There's this guy, with diving outfit, walking in the desert. He then sees some beduins(spelling) and asks:
-Where's the sea man?
-On your left, a few kilometers from here
-Man!!! What a beach!!!!
