So I will share with you the most amazing experience of my life.....And I promise you this is a true story...

It was the morning of Thursday February 12th ,2009 and I had just arrived in London after a 24 hour flight from Sydney to stay with my brother for 6 weeks. It was my first holiday in 3 years and I decided to realise my dream of going to watch my beloved Inter play at the San Siro. I planned my trip to see the biggest game of the season Inter VS AC Merda which would be played on the Sunday of the week I arrived.

So on the Saturday I left my brothers house in Fulham and arrived at the train station to take the train to Stanstead Airport. I had plenty of time. Little did I know, they were doing scheduled track work on the line to the airport that day and so about half way their the trains terminated and we would have to wait over 2 hours until another train arrived. It took me another 2 trains to get to the airport and I arrived right on the time of my flight leaving. I ran to the counter to check my luggage in and get my boarding pass and the lady said that I had missed the final call by 5 minutes and the plane was closed for take off. I pleaded with her as I had nothing but hand luggage but she said no. I was pissed off.

She told me that the next flight with RYAN air was Sunday night at 7pm but I told her I needed to be in Milan to watch the football at around that time. So I proceeded to go to other airlines to find another flight but they were either booked out or not the right time. On the train trip I met a Romanian lady who told me if I missed my flight and their were no other flights to Bergamo then I should take a flight to Venice and catch a train to Milan. So I went back to the lady at the RYAN air desk and asked for any flights to Venice and she said their was one spot left on the at 6pm. Since it was my last resort I took it.

I had a couple of hours to waste before the flight so I rang the hotel I had booked to try and tell them I would be arriving in Milan very late and also to ask them if my tickets had arrived since I purchased them on the Internet and asked for them to be sent to the hotel. Their was not anyone at the hotel that could speak English so we could not understand each other. So I did not know if my tickets had arrived or if I could check in but I knew I had to soldier on.

I boarded the flight and noticed one of the flight attendants was wearing an AC Merda tie. I got chatting with him and told him my situation. He said he would help out once we got to Venice airport. He called the hotel for me and asked about my tickets and explained my situation. They said yes the tickets arrived and I could check in anytime. Finally something went right. He told me to get a bus to Mestre station and then get the train to Milan. I told him thanks for the help but sorry Inter was going to win the Derby.

I found my way to the bus depot and bought a ticket to Mestre station. I walked out to catch the bus and saw that my bus was taking off. I ran for it but missed it. The next bus was in an hour. I waited and took the next bus. I met some Spanish travellers on the bus who said they were in Venice for the Carnival and talked football with them for the whole bus trip. I arrived at Mestre station at 10:15pm and looked for the timetable for trains to Milan, only to see that the last train left at 10pm. The next train would not arrive until 5am Sunday morning. I thought my day could not get any worse but it dd. I went around to all of the hotels in the area but due to the Carnival being on they were all booked out. I even asked to stay on a couch at one hotel but I was flatly refused.

So it was back to the station and I figured I would wait it out until 5am for the first train to Milan (it was around 11:30pm at this time). I sat at the station, it was about 4 degrees with my inter scalf and beanie on just reflecting on the day that had past. I was almost at breaking point but I had to soldier on. As it got to 1AM allot of drunk people started to arrive and this one guy was going round to everyone on the station drunk as speaking the lingo. He came to me and I just kept my head down. He stood their for about half a minute talking to me and I didn’t move. He started getting upset and began nudging me with his foot and thats when I exploded. I got up and shouted at him what the **** is your problem. He stepped back and walked over to his mates. I thought here we go.

At this moment a guy came up to me and told me in his jaded English that it was not safe here and that I needed to go before that guy came back. He told me he was a taxi driver and asked me where I was going. I told him and he said he would take me to Milan for 150 Euros. I didn’t have the cash or really trust him so I said no. He then took me to all of the hotels to ask them for me to stay but again they refused. He then offered for me to stay at his friends house for a few hours for 20 Euros. I had a decision to make....Do I go back and deal with drunks from the train station or put my faith in someone I don’t know. I told him okay.

He took me to his mates place (another Spanish guy who could not speak English), a small run down apartment in a shady area. I went in and his mate told me I could put my head down on the kitchen table as he slept on the couch. Their was no bed in the place. I put my head down but their was no way I was going to sleep. I saw their was a knife on the table next to me and after the day I had just experienced I was ready for anything. But someone was smiling on me and these guys were actually genuine. I stayed their until 4:15 am and then walked back to the station passing women shouting “Amore” “Amore”.

I got back to the station and purchased my ticket. I was tired, cold, hungry but not beaten. All I was thinking was finally I am on the right track. The train arrived and I jumped on but did not sleep cause their were some shady people sitting round me. In 3-4 hours I would be finally in Milan. About half way their an inspector jumped on the train asking for peoples tickets. I gave him mine and he started to go off. I could not understand him but the person next to me told me I had done something wrong and that I did not have a valid ticket because I had not punched the hole in my ticket. I asked him to explain that I did not know the rules but he did not listen. He asked me for my passport details and told me I was getting a 150 Euro Fine. I could not care less (and still to this day never paid the fine) just as long as I could stay on the train.

The train finally arrived in Milan just after 8AM. I jumped off and tried to navigate my way to the hotel. I asked a couple of taxi drivers and they said 50 Euros. I told them where to go cause I knew my hotel was not far from the station. Then one guy asked me where I was going (his English pretty good) and said for 5 Euro he would take me to my hotel. I said no problems. I jumped into his Mercedes taxi (what luxury) and he asked me what I doing. I told him that I had travelled from OZ to come see the game. He looked at me like I was crazy. He then said he would take me past the hotel and show me the way to the San Siro and back. It was great to finally have something go my way. I got to the hotel and went straight in and asked for my ticket. The lady looked around and pulled it out. I was filled with joy. It was great to know that the family who owned the hotel were Interista’s too.

I went up to my room, had a hot shower and put my head down for half an hour. I did not want to miss the day and the build up to the Derby. The city was gearing up for the game and people were out in force to show their support for both sides of Milan - Me included. I set off for the San Siro and when I got there I gave the stadium my blessing before walking all the way around. I found myself a stand that was selling sausage sandwiches, bought 3 of them and polished them off in less than 5 minutes. I had not eaten since breakfast the day before so I was starving. I looked up at the San Siro and what a master piece it was. I took photos and met allot of fantastic people who could not believe their were Interista fans in Australia.

After a couple of hours I returned to the hotel and then went to a bar/coffee shop near my hotel. They had the football on and their were many kids watching passionately I knew I was in the right place. I ordered a beer or 4 (Peroni my favourite Italian Beer), some food and sat back. I had finally arrived to Milan and I knew someone was looking after me upstairs.

At 6:30 pm I made my way down to the stadium, went inside and found my seat. I got their early as I wanted to see the stadium fill up and feel the atmosphere. My seat was second tier but on the halfway line. I didn’t care just to be their was something I was dreaming of for the last 12 years. The atmosphere grew as the game got closer. I was surrounded by Interista fans and they were all asking where I was from. They were all suprised that I was a die hard Inter fan. The teams finally came out to the roar of the packed stadium (close to 90K fans). It was electric. Flairs were let off everywhere, the banners from both sides, some fights happening in one corner between fans. I was home. It was everything I expected plus more and the game had not yet started.

Just before the kick off, the fans around me asked who would score the first goal. Since I loved Adriano I turned and said he would and of course Inter would win. He was not having the best of season so they all said no, no, he not play well this year. I still stuck to my choice. The game started and the stadium erupted. Their were more flares, choreography from both Curva fans. It was hard to know where to look as I did not want to miss any of it.

The opening exchanges were tense with us having more of the clear cut chances. But after 28 minutes my prediction came true. Adriano rising to head in the opener and was filled with joy. Everyone around me went wild and they all said “you were right, you were right”. I looked up to the heavens and pointed to the sky, their were tears running down my face. All of the struggle and bad luck that had occurred the day prior had gone away. It had all been worth it. My dreams had come true and the feeling was like nothing I had ever felt before.

After the goal we took control of the rest of the half creating a wave of chances and we had Merda on the ropes. Just before half time our pressure was rewarded when a long ball to Ibra was headed down into the path of Deki and he slammed the ball home to make it 2 zip at the half. All Interista fans again celebrated once again and we started to taunt the Merda fans with songs.
Half time was also something as the fans displayed there team loyalty through massive banners, lots of singing and choreographed symbols which took up whole ends of the stadium. I had watched so many games on TV but being their live was such a more rewarding experience. You see so much that you miss out on TV. The second half got underway and it was just like the first. Inter were pressing for a third goal and Milan were looking to get back into the game. I was amazed at the skill level of players such as Ibrahimovic, Adriano, Maicon, Zanetti, Deki (pretty much all of the Inter players actually). But in the 70th Minute Milan scored which set up a very nervy finish. We tried to hold the lead and Merda pressed for the equaliser which saw some very close shave moments towards the end.

In injury time I clenched my fists hoping that we would hold on. When the referee blew the final whistle the celebration began. I jumped with joy like a little kid and was so happy. Around the stadium they played the Inter song “Pazza Inter Amala” and the fans were going wild. As people poured out of the San Siro I just sat in my seat, tears in my eyes, overwhelmed with joy and exhausted too. It was the happiest moment of my life. Nothing else mattered. In a way I was still coming to terms with what I had experienced. But I gathered myself and went on back to the bar I had been to earlier to drink and celebrate with all the other Interistas.
When I think back to this experience, it still brings a tear to my eye. I have not felt anything like it since. To all my fellow Interista’s, I recommend you see our team one day. But hope you have better luck getting their than I did.

This is my story....Some may have given up. But it was my will to see my Beloved Inter that got me to the San Siro for the game in the end.

Hope you enjoy reading it.

Peace.

Peace.

i watched inter here in the us when we beat milan 2-0 milito with the both goals! i was a bit disappointed since ibrahimovic left a couple days before that and because we weren't able to see eto'o at the time since he was in milan finalizing his move. the gilette stadium was packed! it was insane, it was incredible. but obviously yours was a better experience and i hope one day i can watch a real inter game like you did without the hassle though :p
