Would a reserve league help the transition of youth players to 1st team or is the current system of loaning and co-owning players with lesser clubs better for the progression of young players into serie a stars???

I'm absolutely up for that. I'd been thinking exactly the same thing lately.

Italy is the only one from the major football countries that has no reserves league.

A reserve league would be fantastic for youth development. It would allow the youngsters to play week in week out with and against more experienced first team players who are not playing regularly.

Another idea woul be to do what they do in Spain and have a reserve team in a lower division. Either way, it would help.

Yeah, it would be great to have a "FC Internazionale B" in Serie C1 or maybe Serie B :)

They have it already in Germany and Spain as far as i know. Does anyone know if it really helps in those countries?? On the first sight i think it is a good idea.

What is a difference between a reserve league, and primavera competitions, when we talk about youth playing regularly and progress ?

Luka, if I'm not wrong in a reserve league you can also use first team players.

This doesn't only benefit the young players, but it is also very useful for first team players who just came back from long injuries and need some playing time before going back to top-level games. You can also use those players who don't get enough playing time like Mancini, Quaremsa, Toldo, Materazzi etc.

Yeah, a great way to get them back into shape, not just leave them eating chips on the stands.

Hmmm, so basicly the difference is the level of the competition in comparison to primavera games.

Well, it makes sense actually, but I think there must be some downside of it, bcause if there wasn't we would have a reserve league in Italy for a long time.

I just can't think of any right now, but I'm sure there is one :p

Wait a minute...

Didn't Matrix play some primavera match last year ?

I think someone else from first team played in that game too.

Yes, Adriano also played there.
There is a rule that allows a maximum of TWO over-age players to play in the Primavera. It's not used much though, other than to humiliate a misbehaved player.

yeah, the rule is 2 players over 20. my thoughts are that because players around 19-23 are forced to move to lesser teams with lesser training and lesser technical abilities i think it would be a good way to keep players at big clubs with the good players and introduce them into the team slowly but surely rather than having a chance and if you don't take it you're practically out of the club. i think for a club like inter, the likes of rene krhin and joel obi would get regular playing time with mancini, quaresma, vieira, matrix, cordoba etc without the pressure of first team football and it would be beneficial to the afore mentioned senior players too. if krhin and obi go on loan to somewhere like chievo, they may not get regular minutes there either whilst training with lesser players and coaches anyways.

also, it seems, italy is the only major country that doesn't have a "reserve" league as england, france, spain, germany, holland and even brazil do.

There is also the question like how many players would like to waste their early 20s, the years they should start playing in a real team, for playing in a reserve team (even if it is Inter), without any guarantese that this will lead to being included into a first team.

This would be even more difficult to accomplish, if we're talking about a players that know that other serie A teams (even the weaker ones) would like to have them in their teams.

Just think about it, the football player job is not something you have all the time in the world for. You get to the age of 20, 21 and you need to start playing regular, and in a real team. These are the years that people should start and curb that pottential. Would you keep playing in a reserve team in hope that one day you will find a place at Inter, or would you rather go to a sides like Bari, Cagliari and taste a real football, and maybe got transfered to a better team eventually ?

I just think that it's like with everything. Everything has its pros and cons.

But it's still better than rotting on the bench for the entire season. Those players can also use this reserve league to prove to their coach they have improved and put some good performances.

Besides, having the reserve league doesn't mean that those players who want more first team games can't leave Inter to join clubs like Bari and Cagliari where they can play more first team games.

You can pretty much say that this reserve league will be like Coppa Italia:

  • Youngsters get more quality playing experience.
  • Injuried players can gain match fitness.
  • Players who are rotting on the bench waiting for first team chances to prove themselves can do it more often in the reserve league.
If a player wants first team games immediately without having to play in the reserve league and prove himself, he can just leave. Easy as that.

It's not an obligation. It's a big extra option.

The problem is only for Inter because of its ridiculous squad size. Other teams don't have so many over-aged (adult) players as Inter. We have 27 players at the moment in our first team. That's a ridiculous amount when we think that 18 players can be called to a match. That leaves always 9 players to the stands. Injuries are there but 9 players is just way too much.

I don't think a reserve league would suddenly be okay in Italy. There hasn't been one, so why clubs would fancy that just like that? Primavera championsip basically does the same job except that there are not many adult players. I mean, where all those adult players would come from to this reserve league? Other clubs don't have squads like Inter which have 9 extra players after the call-up to the match.

I will add to what Cafe said another question:

Ain't "FC Barcelona Atletic", and before "FC Barcelona B", an equivalent of our Primavera team ?

No. It's a reserve team which plays in the same league system as the first team. Though reserve teams can't play in the same league as the first team so the reserve team can't get promoted even if they were eligible to that.
