Hi,

I'd like to know what you people do for money or what kind of study you do.
I want to study Italian Language and Culture but I'm afraid I'll get some kind of lousy job because there's no demand for Italian speaking Italy experts, and I think that's a waste after 6 years of high school on the highest possible level and 4-5 years of studying, which results in a debt I have to pay off the rest of my life.

So, what do you do?

If you have job what kind of study did you (or no study at all?) do and why did you choose this study?

If you study, what do you study and why?

I'm curious!

I studied Computer Science because I love technology, but now I work in Real Estate Development because it offers better money. Almost everyone I know does something different than what they studied, and even if it is in the same field, real life has little to do with college courses.

I know a couple of people who are lucky enough to work in what they love and make good money, but usually it's a trade off and you have to choose: Do what you love and earn less, or do something you hate and earn more.

It has to do with you aspirations in life and where you see yourself financially and socially for the rest of your life.

I still love computers and spend time doing things I enjoy every spare minute I have, but at work I have acquired a different skill set and subsequently an MBA and other degrees in project management. I have a plan to change things in 5 years, then 10 years, etc, and will eventually retire doing something I love.

If you need absolute financial stability, then study what will guarantee you a good job based on projected market demands in a few years and start climbing the career ladder.

If your heart is for Italian and you don't mind being in a financially weaker position, then do what you love. Worst case you'll work as a translator for the Italian embassy in the Netherlands. But on the other hand, maybe you'll be lucky to have everything work out, and one day in the future you will become the Dutch Ambassador to Italy.

Good luck.

Busy with my honors degree in business management, I have 5 modules to go.

I plan to go into the corporate world when I finish my current but eventually I plan to have my own business.

I study electrotechnic but I'm taking it very easy:D

In the meantime I work in a casino as a croupier where I earn very good money. When I finish my studying than (if I'm under 27) I'll go study something else, probably gardening (I really love plants:D), but if I'm over 27 I can't study for free anymore and I'll just stay in the casino.

I study in Slovenia.

You can sign in university for free after you finish high school (app. 19 years old). Than you can fail one year and still sign for free. If you fail for the second time you have to pay for the third try.

If you successfully finish you studying before you're 27, you can sign in other study for free.

That's very nice man!

Here in Holland a few years ago studying was heaven! You could be a student for 10 years for free with everything covered (health insurance etc.) and free public transport throughout the whole country.

Now they discovered that a lot of people took 10 years for a study that could be done in 4 years and bla bla bla....

They changed everything and in today's newspaper there's an article about students and their debts... Sometimes over 120 000 euros...

Yeah...few years ago there was no limit on how many times you can sign in for free. Students in Slovenia have very cheap "lunch tickets" and discounts on practically everything.

The best thing was "students work" for which you didnt have to pay taxes. But employers started to abuse that because they also didnt have to pay anything else then the student workers wages. If you were a student you got a job in a second but it was only for the time you had the status of a student.

Now we students also have to pay taxes to force the employers in employing "proper" workers who couldnt get a job before. The bitch is we pay taxes but we dont get nothing in exchange (no "vacation bonuses", if you get ill and cant go to work, they dont pay you, "work time" doesnt run....). If it doesnt change soon there will be huge stundets protests next year:D

I'm a computer scientist too. Although, I would love to specialize in Artificial Intelligence.

I also like learning foreign languages like you, thomas. I already studied Italian, French and Spanish, but I intend to study the Italian language and culture in Italy. I'll do so once I have the time.

I'm studying a subject in which a lot of "elite" people teach you things that you would probably never use in real life:D, unless you become one of them someday. That's political science:D.

It's interesting to know about history, to know exactly what Nero was thinking when he kicked his wife and from that we "discovered" the reason why J.W Bush would not do the same to his lady when China refused to conform to several American-initiated international norms:D. You hear those stories every day in Chicago school. But somehow I love it.

Btw, i'm trying to get a job in UNICEF but its really difficult now.

I'm in the last class of my bachelor study with major of International Relations and Political science and minor in International Economics. I'm feeling pretty dumb because of my dream to become diplomat, i don't think our government will allow me to work inside it. Right now i'm working for Norwegian state oil company(Statoil) in Baku as payed intern.

I probably should think about MBA, but i'm just too lazy and too tired to continue my education.

Wow lots of computer scientists on this board is seems :O. I'm starting my 4 year long studies in the area in the beginning of September.

As for languages I've been to quite some English schools over the years (did the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) and lately I've been studying some Japanese on my own due to my interest in anime and Japanese culture.

Well right now i am still in college. I had a year off (the 2008-2009 year) where i went one semester to AUC (American university) and the second semester which is still ongoing until now i didnt register to any college. Went to france for 3 months and worked as an intern in the UN. will go baqck to college in October 2009 when the new semester starts. I already finished 2 years there so i have 2 (3 years if i slack off or anything) years left to finish. After that i have no idea what i want to do since what i am majoring in right now is something i have no interest in pursuin in the future.
