I thought it would be a good idea to have a single thread about these awards ;). If it's not OK, then let the Mods do their job and delete this thread. Anyway...

• UEFA Best Goalkeeper of the Year
Júlio César (FC Internazionale Milano)
Hugo Lloris (Olympique Lyonnais)
Víctor Valdés (FC Barcelona)

• UEFA Best Defender of the Year

Lúcio (FC Internazionale Milano)
Maicon (FC Internazionale Milano)

Gerard Piqué (FC Barcelona)

• UEFA Best Midfielder of the Year

Xavi Hernández (FC Barcelona)
Arjen Robben (FC Bayern München)
Wesley Sneijder (FC Internazionale Milano)

• UEFA Best Forward of the Year

Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)

Diego Milito (FC Internazionale Milano)

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United FC)

The nominations are decided by the coaches of the 16 teams that reached the knockout stage of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League. Each coach has the opportunity of voting for the individual positional prizes as well as to name their choice for UEFA Club Footballer of the Year 2010.

We should win all these awards. But uefa will give an award to either robben or messi.

And its a disgrace that pique is nominated ahead of samuel.

My bad... Missed it somehow. Already fixed :).

Expect to win the awards for the best goalkeeper, defender and midfielder. Milito was immense but this hype about Messi...

Agreed. In all fairness, Messi did go nuts against Arsenal.

But he did shit when it really mattered in the two legs vs inter. Milito scored glutch goals each time when the pressure was on.

I'm not disputing that, but it's not like UEFA is just picking him because he's Messi. He had his fair share of good performances.

Let's not forget that it's not UEFA, it's the 16 coaches who decide who deserves the award.

The question is not whether he has had his share of good performances. The question is has he been the best forward/striker in the cl from the knockout stages and the answer clearly is no.

In fact one could make an arguement that olic was better then both messi and rooney and should be listed above them.

If you look at the knockout phases messi only scores in two games. Ibra and pedro did the same, do they also deserve nominations?? I think not. So messi basicly gets nominated because of his name and one game vs arsenal.

Is it only for the knockout stages?

As far as I know that's the case. Even if we take the group stage into consideration it only adds 2 more games where he scored. He only scored in both games vs kiev.

Messi was the best in la liga but he had an average to above average cl.

Milito had a average - bad group stage but he was glutch in each and every knockout tie.

If we dont win all of these awards then its definately fixed! Our players had a much better campaign that any of the other nominees. Also messi's 4 goals counted for shit in the end. Milito scored in every round towards the end which is worth more than 4 goals against a poor arsenal defence. Robben should definatley not get the award ahead of sneijder as robben was shit in the fian l end of where as wesley kept his form all the way through.

I'm sure Milito will get the striker's award over Messi.

So we'll get all of them. :)

I'll actually be furious if we dont. I think Lucio should get best defender over maicon though as his performances were solid. I remember the the chelsea games especially where it was just the lucio show and he was pissing dorgbe right off because he was outclassing him

Lucio practically dismantled all chelsea offence by himself alone. If he dont win then I dunno what to say...

Exactly! After he won it back he would start running past people with the ball like they wern't there. Maicon had a great campaign and I know why he is there but for defending it has to be lucio hands down. Pique haha I bet you he was only included because of that offside goal he scored. Not like he did his job in the 1st leg and in the 2nd leg he wasnt doing his job because we had been cheated which allowed them to push up fully.
