The latest problems with the forum

As you all have noticed, this forum has been running badly for the last days. This has been very frustrating, especially on match-days. The problem until yesterday was that our server was working, so there was nothing we could do. But yesterday, we stumbled upon something that I had never seen before. It was related to MySQL and we seem to have some limits on that one. I don´t know how this counter works, but I will find out and see what can be done to prevent such a thing happening again.

Sorry for all the inconviniences.

I know we discussed about deleting the old unactive threads earlier. Maybe we should do it, delete for example threads that have been unactive for 6 months or so. Then again I have no idea of the error so...

If you want to delete threads could you just post one last msg on them saying: I'm going to delete this thread shortly.

This would give us the chance to know before they're gone for good. What do you think?

As you guys have noticed, we had another downtime tonight. This is completely beyond our control and it is due to our server that has a limit of some stupid thing we don´t understand. The contents of it is that we are too active, and that is why. The more people that are online, the more in trouble we are in.

Not to create havoc but the future of this forum is in extreme doubts. For those existing members I´d like to ask: What would you say about starting from scratch?

If it´s the only way, yes. If the majority says yes, let it rule. :)

If we have to soo be it. Its the fans (us) who make the forum great not the rest of it so as long as we all are still at the new forum everything will be ok.

Jimmy,

Yet another start from scratch ??
If it's a must and we have no other option, then why not ? ;)

But if this problem an be solved by deleting the old threads, then why not try that, if possible. I see no problem in that. As we discussed earlier, it could reduce the number of personal number of posts, but who cares about that. :) ;)

It has nothing to do with old posts or topics. It has to do with activity per hour. In other words, if a lot of people are online and updating the site during an hour and there are over 500 000 updates, then a specific SQL counter will kick in. This counter is smaller than what other forums should be, and it has to do with our host.

We either have to buy a bigger counter from our host (which we still don´t know the prize nor has any ensurances that it will work), start over on a new server (which means that some of us are forced of letting go of the forum for financial reasons) or just giving up completely.

One thing is for sure - we need a forum such as this one,so somehow we have to do something. If you start from scratch that means that we would have to change server(?) to one that doesn't have this problem.

Whats the situation if we start from scratch?

Fabio :(

And if we did start from scratch, how long would it take to get the forums up?

I could offer a temporary home!

Fabio :scared:

Jimmy, what about putting a limit to the number of posts? I know some forums do, you get like a timer after u post, saying: you have to wait 5 minutes before you can post another message.

The timer stays on so you know when you can post again. The lenght of the wait is less for senior member, and more for new posters.

Could something like that work?

If we need to start from scratch it would be a shame for all the posts lost but in the end who cares, as long as everyone find their way to the new forums, that's the most important thing.

I'm really amazed that the server that has worked so well for quite long time is somehow fucked up. I honestly think that you guys should first try to solve the problem with our provider and then if he can't fix the problem, then start from a scratch. I just don't know if we end up having the same problems after 6 months again.

I just would like to assure everyone that we, the admins, would do everything to ensure that the members in this forum will have a 'habitat' where we can talk about our passion on Inter, one way or another. There is a slight problem at the moment, but I am very confident that this will be solved. There might be several more 'forum-down' in the next few days but we (Jimmy) will talk to our server and solve this problem as soon as possible. We're very sorry for the inconvenience.

In the mean time, I think it would be wise for us to ask for some of your words on:
  • 1) Have you heard of any global change on SQL servers that decrease the limit for 'max questions'? We need this information to ensure that our server is not lying to us.
    2) Please recommend any VERY RELIABLE server to us, since our current server doesn't seem to be one.

You have said that this forum is too active and I am sorry to say it but you only have yourselves to blame for creating such a great site :D .

No, seriously won't the problem just happen again, because if we start from scratch that site will become popular as well  .

V Bulletin 3 is very reliable ;) .

vBulletin is a forum system , not a server.
Well I have once installed a forum on a lycos server , needles to say it's shite but it can be a temporary replacement to this forum until you sort this matter up.

If we start from scratch, then obviously we will make sure that we choose a server that has enough of these 'max_questions'. We didn´t even know such things existed when we bought this server.

vBulletin is a first choice for everyone but it costs money. phpBB doesn´t, and that´s why we have this kind of forum.

The whole thing is very much related to money right now.

If you guys have any temporary forum, then post the link because I can bet my left testicle on that the forum will go down before the game tonight.
