It's a part of African culture.
But seriously, it is. I remember after the Confederations Cup I was looking to buy one online, and they weren't sold anywhere. It was only a couple months ago that places like soccer.com started selling them. So that strikes the whole commercialization thing.
As far as the history part, just because they haven't been blowing plastic horns called vuvuzelas forever doesn't mean it isn't rooted in their history. Pretty much since the beginning of time people have been blowing horns, usually made from animal horns.
If you think that has nothing to do with soccer, you're correct. However, the metal horns blown in the 70s that developed into modern, plastic vuvuzelas are a part of the short African soccer history. You have to remember that South Africa wasn't even admitted into FIFA until '92.
