Ronaldo is back and he is scoring for fun again. 37 goals already this season and he was so bad for about half a season.

The cycle of "Ronaldo is finished" followed by him gearing up in time for knockout stages each season is quite fun.

He's 33yo now and, however dedicated to his craft he may be, he can't probably push throughout the season like in his younger days. So he makes sure to hit top form when it really matters.
The same goes for Messi, although his approach is a bit different. I recently read an interview where he explains the adjustments he made to his game in the last few years.

The part where he says that he runs just like he's always done is a white lie. I think he's realised that he doesn't have the stamina to "pick up the ball and make his play" (continuously wreaking havoc on the whole defense) as he used to do, hence he's started to drop deeper, getting more involved in the build-up and "picking" his runs at goal.

He may not be scoring as many goals as he used to, but I feel like this season's Messi is the best I've ever seen. There's just that unstoppable aura around him that I can't explain that I did not see previously.

Medel already had experience as a CB before he came here. And Medel didn't turn into a CB, he was a DM who played CB at times.

I think Pep with Macherano kind of paved the way for a guy like Medel to be used as a CB. Medel also wasn’t world class at his position like Mascherano was. There was some belief he might play better if he moved to the position he played for Chile where he admittedly played better. Different situations in my opinion.
