I'm actually ok with him getting the renewal.
I get that we had a poor Serie A season, but I do think that Simone has improved as a coach as the season went on. We had huge issues conceding goals in transition for the first half of the season and he did fix that.
I also like the fact that he was able to get the team out of that bad slump, leading to us playing good football and getting results. For our previous coaches, once we went into a slump, there was either no getting out of it (Pioli, Mazzari), or we limped to the finish line, defending with 11 players and panicking at home against a relegation-threatened Empoli team (Spaletti).
This guy was under so much pressure, but I appreciate he always defended the team and players and it actually worked. When we had those games against Spezia/Salernitana, he got a lot of criticism but he always said that the team were doing well and it was just a case of chances not going in, and I think that was true for a lot of matches. As soon as we got that one win against Empoli (ironically a 3-0 win even though we had less chances than against Salernitana/Spezia), the team's confidence was there and we never looked back.
I know people sometimes say cup competitions can be lucky, but I think Simone showed enough that he's a very good coach and knows how to approach these matches.
- Porto is traditionally a very tough matchup for the Italian teams in recent years - we suffered but got through it (I actually think this was our toughest knockout match between R16/QF/SF)
- Everyone said we were lucky to draw Benfica, but I believe they were considered a dark horse before we faced them and had scored the most goals in the CL. I think Inzaghi deserves a lot of credit for how we played those two matches and that we made Benfica look ordinary.
- Milan derby speaks for itself. Regardless of whether you rate Milan or not, a semi-final derby is huge, and the fact we beat them 4 times in 2023 with 0 goals conceded is not by accident.
To finish off, I wanted Inzaghi to be fired after the home game against Monza (Where we were truly terrible), but I think he's proved me wrong. I just hope we don't dismantle the team and actually give him the pieces that he needs to be successful here.
He may not be Conte with his consistency in the league, but he has also taken us much further in Europe than Conte ever could, facing off against some very high-rated coaches and quality teams.
He did fail losing the league to Milan, but that doesn't mean he's forever a 'choker' - coaches improve and evolve. Inzaghi is still fairly young. Let's not forget Spaletti and Pioli were also considered chokers and they are the two most recent Serie A winners.
