This would make sense since I don’t see why we wouldn’t just match Milan’s offer and let the player decide.
I think it's pretty clear. Conte learned that we were planning to buy Tonali and tears started streaming down his face because Sandro Tonali (and this is true) happens to not be Arturo Vidal. He demanded a change in strategy i.e. buy him
exactly and
only what he wants, like a spoiled and ultra picky child, and a change in strategy is what we did.
I have seen reports speculating that we're waiting to sell before we buy or some other bullshit. Firstly, why is the need to sell only now becoming a consideration? Did we not need to sell when we had the Tonali deal all but completed a month ago? It's not as if this necessity to sell came out of nowhere. Our situation has remained the same since then, so this idea that the Tonali deal rests upon our requirement to suddenly "make space" for him is fucking retarded. In fact, we just released Borja, so if anything, we
have made space!
So why the fuck aren't we buying Tonali?
I don't think there is even any question really. I mean, this is literally how it happened:
PRE-meeting transfer situation: Tonali deal at 99% merely awaiting confirmation, plus Kumbulla ready to go forward
POST-meeting situation: Tonali and Kumbulla deals on hold indefinitely, OFF for all effects and purposes. New targets Vidal and Kolarov
It's fucking plain as day and the evidence is glaringly, stupidly clear.
Like I said before, I don't even like Tonali half as much as most here but this is just another Nainggolan / Zaniolo deal all over again, but much worse this time. At the request of a stubborn coach, we gave up on a long-term investment in order to chase a very costly, short-term project, hoping for immediate rewards. Nainggolan, that "immediate reward" player, bombed spectacularly and is now an expensive anchor who we are literally paying other people to take off our hands, while Zaniolo, pre-COVID, was supposedly valued upwards of €70m. This has all the markings to play out in exactly the same way.
Anyway, Milan will supposedly wrap this deal up in 48 hours. Let's see how that goes eh.
