A SHOUT AS CAPTAIN

On July 9th 2013, Mauro Icardi presented himself to the Inter supporters. He was only 20 years old then and so we did not know what he and Inter would do together. In 2013, Inter coach was Walter Mazzarri and the former Sampdoria had this to say about the challenge: “I am young and I can still improve a lot. Inter are a great club. The number 9? It does not scare me.”

Five years later, the little boy has turned great, with an armband and an impressive goalscoring record of 107 goals in 182 games for Inter. Not only that he continues thriving to become the great leader of Luciano Spalletti’s team: “Here at Inter, we have a responsibility towards the fans. Their passion is one more factor for us to do well for everyone. We must thank all those who follow us, at home and away games, from all over the world.”

The first day of training camp begins like this, with the words of Mauro Icardi who will train by himself for the entire week to not risk any physical hitches (like last year in Riscone) and to be at the top condition in just a few days. The Argentinian had a crazy desire to start a new season to the point that he slept on Sunday night at training facility in Pinetina, to be up first thing in the morning, even before the arrival of his new and old teammates.

“After a month and a half of vacation, you really miss the daily routine of training. There is a great desire to start this new season in which we will be in the Champions League, which was our goal, and to be here to work every day. It will be a different training camp compared to others. We will train well for the Champions League and we will have to help the newcomers to settle as soon as possible. We will have to change a bit compared to last year where we already laid the foundation for this season.”

Icardi's stats over the past 5 years:

• 13-14: 9 goals 22 games (average goals per game: 0.4)
• 14-15: 22 goals 36 games (0.6)
• 15-16: 16 goals 33 games (0.5)
• 16-17: 24 goals 34 games (0.7)
• 17-18: 29 goals 34 games (0.85)

SUMMER - In a certain way, this was Mauro’s summer. Just by looking at his social network with his wife and agent Wanda Nara and his children, traveling thousand of miles to various locations between South Africa, Seychelles, New York, Turks and Caicos Islands and Ibiza. Mauro, after a super last season and 29 goals in Serie A (tied with Immobile in first place), immediately wanted a new contract and at first, he was a bit disappointed by the delays imposed by the club. Which, however, has always kept it straight with him: Icardi is our captain and has a contract with us. We want to keep him because he wants to play in the Champions League with us. We will renew but now there are other priorities. This was and still is the thinking of management, specifically sporting director Piero Ausilio and CFO Giovanni Gardini.

In the meantime, the days have passed and we are currently in the two-week period where his release clause can be triggered at any time. Nine days have gone but until 15, that is Sunday, those who present 110 million to Inter can negotiate directly with Mauro and Inter cannot do a thing. If nobody shows up and when there are no crazy offers, there will be a new chapter in the black and blue colors for the 25-year-old Argentinian. Because the desire to renew the agreement that expires in 2021 is not in question: both sides want to make that happen and in a few days, his signature will arrive. The Zhang family is wiling to put on the table important figure, between 5-6 million euros a year plus bonuses until 2023, with the possibility to make even more if he is able to continue to perform.

FIDELITY - Inter and Icardi have continued to exchange messages to stay close to each other. Mauro, as a good captain, welcomed the new arrivals in the right way, especially Nainggolan and Lautaro Martinez who will need help to settle in a new country, a new environment. Both will share a room at Pinetina in these two weeks of training camp: this is a way to show the young Argentinian that he is important. “The newcomers? I welcomed everyone on social media and over the phone. It was a way to make them understand that we are one big Inter family.” A family that Mauro does not want to give up, as he wrote on Instagram showing the photo of July 9th five years ago titled: “2013-2018, to be continued…” Inter and Icardi, yes, this story will continue.

In Europe,not in China or USA.

Both of them were good players for us but actually we are much better now from what we have been last season. Asamoah, de Vrij, Nainggolan, Politano and Martinez are all quality additions which will make our game step up significantly.

In the coming days there will be more changes in the team so our management is doing a pretty good job. Lets not forget this team has managed to maintain top spots of the league in the first phase of last season while Rafinha was not here and Cancelo has hardly played that much. I mean, there is no room for complains, especially in this transfer window.

I don't think its fair to expect big things from Lautaro already in the upcoming season as he is a newcomer here. He is more of a long term project than anything else, but however Politano's arrival will most probably give a boost in our attack since he is a creative player who is able to score and provide assists. On another note, players like Asamoah, de Vrij and Nainggolan are all able to bring an immediate impact in our game.

I think Asamoah is extremely underrated in here. He was great last season, besides he benched Alex Sandro who is rumoured to be worth 60m (not sure if he is still worth that much though ). I can't get anymore happy with our signings so far. Also we are probably gonna sign a couple of more players in the upcoming days so our team could be considered a complete package for the next season.
