Hmm, i think you have a point. I forgot that Figo got a yellow for it. The ref initially missed it it seems, but he later booked him for it. I think it's a rule that if the ref punished it in the game, no further action will be taken.

that's the case..

Great picture...I loved that. Deco and Gio couldn't believe the referee either.

Btw. it should also tell you a lot about the referee, when in a game between 2 teams, where half of each squad are friends and have played together in the same team at some point(Figo with Cocu, Maniche, Carvalho with Robben, Gio Van Bommel with Deco etc.) 4 players are sent off and 11 booked.

Well, I just got home and read your opinions on the game, I agree with some and disagree with some.

First: Portugal, a lot of fighting spirit and with great team work we got a deserved win, mostly because Netherlands was very bad on the attack, also this win is a prize to the team and for Scolari that so many times were criticized by some Portuguese. I agree that Portugal was losing time but that was their job, I don't like it but can understand.

Second: Netherlands, I expected more! More everything, more imagination, more spirit, more determination to win. Van Basten wasn't good on the sub's he had Van Nistelrooij in the bench and he send Heitinga in? When he was losing? Van Persie was the only player that was on the level. They didn't had much fair-play, much less than the Portuguese, I think.

Third: The referee, where to start? Boulahrouz should have been sent off for the foul on Ronaldo, Costinha should have been sent off minutes before he was, Then he sents Boulahrouz off for a non-existing foul on Figo, the second yellow card shown to Deco just made me laugh.

Also I agree that the play with Robben should have been a penalty for Netherlands, however the game was already stopped, so the foul never existed. This was the most "carded" game in the history of World Cup's, 16 yellows and 4 reds.

Next: Portugal to face England without Costinha and Deco, Scolari has to put in Petit in Costinha's place and Simão making Figo's role, and move Figo to the middle, this of course if Cristiano Ronaldo recovers.

Congratulations Pedro, Portugal did have a great fighting spirit and deserved every ounce of this victory. However, I have few points:

1) Don't get me wrong, Boulahrouz first foul was vicious, but not the type that gets a straight red-card. Boulahrouz is like Materazzi, Ferraro and Samuel type, he is really physical and sometimes over the top.

They even call him Der Kannibale (The Cannibal ) at Hamburg, you see many plays like that with players like him.

2) His second card was deserved, he smacked (intentionally or unintentionally) Figo, and Figo made the most of it.

3) Deco's red-card was deserved. Like I said, Heitinga was a jerk, but you can't tackle cynically like that. And for the second, I guess it was because of the fact that it was a shirt-pull or a similar thing against a counterattacking player.

Finally, what is the latest on CR? I don't like the guy, but felt sorry to see him cry like that!

Guus Hiddink gets a lot of credit for taking South Korea, PSV and Australia to exceed everyone's expectation. But I think Scolari deserves loads of credit too! He made Brazil & Portugal 2 very solid NTs and Scolari is now on a record 11 WC victories in a row! Portugal has only conceded once in the tournament too. Shame I didn't bought them at 24.00 as championship winners. :stress:

yeah Scolari is a good coach, he knows how to keep a team calm and prepare them well.
His record in World Cups speaks for itself.

Excuse my ignorance, but can sending offs be appealed? If so, Portugal should really mount a good case for Deco, I reckon in relation to FIFA's 'fair play' (ARF!) they might have a shot of winning the case.

Hey Guys,,

Great game, despite the number of cards, never saw Portugal playing like this before,, what a spirit, that what Holland lacked, (THE HEART) they didnt fight enough and they didnt do anything out of the book to confuse the protugese defense.

I saw all the game and i believe all bookings were right and deserved, Deco was obstracting a free kick by holding the ball and going with it, that is a straight Yellow card, and it happened before in this WC, where the player kick the ball towards the other guy who is so close to the FK place and that guy ended with a yellow. its a rule.

I wanna see CR back for England, i would love to see Portugal go thru to the semi final, they impressed me more than England for sure so far and they are experienced players with Figo..

Anyway read what Mancini said when they asked him who he thought will win the WC, he said : Portugal... hmmm

they should give it at least a shot.

With Deco against England's non existing midfield it should be little problem for them. Deco bitchslapped Van Bümmel, Cocu and Sneijder all night....he should do it similar against Lampard, Gerrard and Carrick.

MOM is referee, no doubt about it. :p

I can only remember seeing him in action today :D, fun to watch though, nevertheless.

Hamed, I think Deco got his second yellow for not giving the ball back (time wasting) which is ridiculous! Portugal should appeal, they'd have a good chance of getting that yellow revoked.

Ivanov is a jerk of a ref. As someone mentioned, the ability to handle situations like these made Collina a world class ref. Ivanov didn't try to calm things down, he went mad himself, just worsening the situation.

You took the words out of my mouth.

The first yellow card on Deco, I have nothing to say, the Dutch didn't had any fair-play but Deco should had thought about what he was doing, but the second card..., I think Ivanov just went crazy in the second half.

About C. Ronaldo, I will tell you something later, because the injury is being evaluated right now.

Here is one photo by referee and yellow and red cards :):) ! I think now Portugal MUST win England, and they will, because England play like some small club from Croatian league.

It was your namesake Khalid Boulahrouz. His first foul on CR was vicious, and then he was going for the ball with Figo, but his arm flapped back and smacked Figo in the face (I think it was unintentional, but worthy of a red-card since it stopped Figo.)

Zamat and Pedro, thanks for the correction. I thought Deco pulled the shirt of the Dutch player. I guess the ref could have let him go this time, since it's like an unwritten rule that you let a guy with a yellow-card go away sometimes.

Figo faces ban

Portugal captain Luis Figo could miss his side’s World Cup quarter-final clash with England this Saturday through suspension. The Inter winger looks set to face FIFA’s wrath after he was caught on camera headbutting Mark Van Bommel in last night’s 1-0 win over Holland, a game which saw four players dismissed. However, boss Luiz Felipe Scolari leapt to the defence of Figo: “His behaviour was much better than the Dutch,” stated the Brazilian. “Jesus said turn the other cheek, but Figo is not Jesus Christ.”
