i'm not sure if there is already a thread on this,

but, who do you reckon is better. i think its interesting, becasue both these guys are gonna be at the forefront for the next world cup campaighns for both countries.

it seems the english think he is the best in the world, but this world cup, has done nothing to really enhance the reputation of both playeres. in my opinion messi played the superior football in the cup

anyway watch this video, and give your opinon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDXB5dfd5AY&search=messi

if their are any other really good young talents that you think is better, then please say

Javier Zanetti,
messi because of the simple fact that he is skilful whereas rooney is a typical english player who's very good at the basic stuff.

The englishmen thinks they are superior to every other country anyway. Rooney does have his talent, but not as big as what the media is trying to illustrate.

IMO, Messi has what it takes to become the best. Not just in terms of potential, but also his modesty, something that Rooney has to learn. Rooney's characteristics can destroy his career, no matter how big his potential is.

well i just hope, messi doesn't get injured too often, otherwise we wont be able to see his full potential.

however, i think the comparison between roon and meesy is closer then you guys make it.

i think people give rooney way to much crap, becasue he is english, and everyone hates english. rooney has strength, and has pitbull like characteristics.

some of the goals rooney has scored have been just brilliant. but if rooney, can change the way he acts, he can give messi a run for his money

Cheers for the vid Pabs!

There is no doubt Rooney is better than Messi. Rooney is a complete genious and the 'temper' is passion that makes him even better. He had a poor WC cos he is unfit from the injury and he is made to play upfront on his own which is completly absurd. He will become the greatest player of all time.

No doubt Messi has the skills but i reakon he will go the same was as Saviola and Aimar and not live up to the hype of being the new Maradona.

No doubt Rooney is better than Messi

I think Rooney is guaranteed to be some sort of a success because he's provem himself pretty much everywhere at such a young age. However Messi's talent is light years away from Rooney and if he doesn't struggle with injury or form like Saviola and Aimar, then he will become a better player than Rooney and hell even Ronaldinho.

Right now:
Tevez >> Rooney > Messi

Few years:
Messi >> Tevez >> Rooney

I'll take Rooney over just about any young forward in the world. Has about every quality for his position including pace, and I think that he cares about football much more then other players and although those emotions may hurt him now as a young lad, as he matures and grows older, he won't lack much motivation where as others may drop down.

Messi is an extraordinary talent as well, but he isn't anywhere near as guaranteed as becoming a finished article as Rooney is and he's only 1-2 years younger. (well, he hasn't proved to me his hype as much as the latter has, anyway) Even then, his skill is extremely overrated, IMO.

Rooney has some skill, but he's an idiot :p He really is! Rooney is a very stupid person. That's why he cannot use that skill...

Messi is a smart kid(not complaining for bench) and he has loads of more talent than Shrek!
So Messi, is much much better.

Before this thread continues, I'd like to highlight that this shouldn't be who is better since both play different positions, but who do you personally prefer. For me, when you put Messi in the same sentence as past greats, your instantly overrated him. He's done nothing close at this level, but has shown the potential to be one of the world's best in the future. In reality, how many of these types have we really seen, especially coming out of his country, Argentina.

It isn't that I am not a fan but he just hasn't done as much as some of the Euro wonderkids. Hasn't he only played one full season at the first team for Barca while Rooney was at Euro 2004 at just the same age?

It's all a matter of preference and "predicting the future". Not who is "better". Technically speaking, no one could say Leo is less skillfull, but wasn't Denilson one of the best players on the ball and what not?

Messi has double the talent Maradona had.

rooney has no skill,

e.g. in a tight area surrounded by players rooney would use he's strength and determination to get out of the area

whereas messi would do a trick to get out, also messi plays more short passes whereas rooney's passing is usually more long.

ER, Rooney has proved himself everywhere??? LAst I checked, he failed to score a single goal in last CL, and even the CL before that he only managed to score in a single game against the mighty Fernebache!!. Looney hasnt dont much anywhere, apart from EPL.

Messi on the other hand, took Argentina, to World youth Championship, shown his skills in Laliga and CL. Even in this WC, he didnt get much chance to play, but whatever he did, he showed his brilliance.

Stop comparing Looney with Messi, its not fair to Looney to be comapred to someone who has so much more talent than him. Compare Looney with Torres, thats a better compatiosn

this is absolutely correct because in the CL if he plays he's phyiscal game he will be penalised and therefore struggles, this also suggests he's not skilful.

For an Englishman, he's skillful! There isn't any other lumbrejack around, except Joe Cole and a couple of others, that have good skills. Rooney is one of them, but the fact that he uses his pigstyle strength instead, suggests that he's stupid too :D

shahz, unfortunatly your opinion will not be take seriously, cause you just hate engalnd way too much to even begin to apreciate rooney :D

the way i look at it, is that the england world cup team, pinned so much of their hope on rooney, and his ablitiy to play good football. rooney was supposed to be the money man, and obviously the english saw something very special in him

on the other hand, messi, wasn't the "main man" of the argie team. he was just their to provide some skill, and really just assert himself in the international scene.

i still havn't seen enough of messi to give him the nodd over rooney.
