For me, its the opposite. It is very difficult (and expensive) to buy a striker who scores 20+ goals a season. Icardi has made it. Another good season at his age, and we are talking about 60m+ in todays market. This is the kind of striker you need if you are thinking of building a top team.
While I rate Kovacic, his position is more expendable. We have Hernanes and Shaqiri for his position, and since Mancini does not need a regista, I can't see Kova starting every game next season unless he performs consistently well. If we have to sell one of Icardi or Kova, we will miss Kova less.
Though the way Kovacic has finished this season, I am hoping we can retain both.
I just wanted to point out that this is a very interesting analysis and that although I am a big fan of Kovacic, I agree that it is harder to replace Icardi than Kova.
The market for a talented creative midfielder is richer than a striker scoring 20+ goals.
