you eliminate 16 in the first round
then you eliminate 8
then you eliminate 4
then you eliminate 2
then you eliminate 1 and 1 wins

that adds to 32.

Note its all powers of 2.


If you wanted to run a larger competition, you'd need 64 teams, either that or some way of separating teams in the groups so you have an 'intermediate' round of 32 teams, with 16 teams that are "already safe for the next round", and then you cut 16 of the 32, and then you have ANOTHER round of 32.

There's no way round it.
