Learning Italian

ive wanted to learn it for a while now and ive decided now is the time to start. What the best way to go about learning italian?

id imagine quite a few on here speak it well as a second language. i know a small bit of french from school and have been to italy 5-6 times so have picked up little bits, mostly words and phrases rather than anything substantial.

i have a fair bit of time and am not in a mad rush to learn, over the next 2-3 years probably.

any advice/hints/tips/plans?

ive seen things saying that reading newspapers is good, GdS is an obvious choice

i suppose football websites are pretty much the best to start off, then once i can work out things i could start listening to things. always thought reading it would be a lot easier than listening. speaking should be easier once i can read/write it

also looking at things like football that i have an interest in should make it a lot easier

i am trying to avoid the dedicated courses etc as i think i might get bored of them too quick

i want to be able to speak it, the football thing was more of a way to get started off as can relate to it easier

If you can speak English you're already halfway there. About 60% of the vocabulary in English comes from Latin, so they have plenty of words in common.

A good trick to get started is to find basic similar words in both languages, and use translate tools to see how they're pronounced.

Then you can start filling in the blanks with the not-so similar words.

I was able to take classes in Italian as elective modules during my degree and, because my Uni didn't have a language department, they had a deal so that we could study a language as the Central college of Glasgow. They whole department was great and it was easily the best part of my degree. I did all 6 levels modules (I had to get special permission for the last level as I should have only been allowed one non psychology module in my last year but because I had done them over the years they didn't hesistate to allow me to continue with it) and, from my rambling, you can tell I enjoyed the hell out of it. I don't know if Glasgow is in range for you though.

I started studying it in August and just a few days ago I finished the first module (there are 6 in total). The first two months were very easy as it's very similar to spanish, but then things started to get more complicated and confusing because although some words are similar they have different meaning and uses, for example the prepositions. If you want to learn it perfectly I don't think there's other way but to take a course or at least buy a book about it. Watching movies and games will help but as a complement not as a substitute.

glasgow is too far but im sure i could find something in dundee or aberdeen. trying to avoid taking a course or anything like that. im studiing via the open uni so i could even probably find something through them but id rather keep it something i do off my own back at my own pace

Thats a shame m8 as the place I studied at was brilliant to the point where it wasn't really a course it was something I enjoyed but yeah you should be able to find something similar at the open Uni. You could try that rosseta stone language pack stuff but I have no idea what that would be like.

I had a language book next to me while I had FIF open haha so this thread came to my mind and I thought Id write the basic approaches to first starting out to learn any language mentioned in the book

You can do most of these steps with Google Translate

1. Learn Numbers 1 to 10
2. Learn the Basic colours
3. Learn 7 days of the week, then the 12 months
4. Learn the pronouns i, you, he....
5. Learn basic body parts head, arm, etc...
6. Learn basic phrases, how are you, what time is it
7. Learn basic verbs, to be, to go, to do and their conjugations
8. Open a 1000 most used words in the language list and go one by one, especially pay attention to the first words


Then its all about applying. Listen to songs while reading their lyrics and see if you recognize any words. With time it gets natural.
