I dont see how we wont win a defamation case?
The article itself is very tame... other sources which took it and ran with it later made it more offensive. For example RAI TV has been talking about it all day, and Goal.com's headline was "Inter ROCKED by SCANDAL".
The original article is here:
http://www.ilgiornale.it/a.pic1?ID=324769
It basically talks about a report which is being filed. This 'report' in turn is saying that Inter fixed matches. The newspaper itself never attempts to point fingers, but merely "report" what the report says.
It's not that we can't win a defamation case, but there's not much to pursue here. The journalist can always claim immunity to his sources, and a report doesn't need to be produced. If they do need to show it, then it can easily be faked.
Even when you consider the ownership of the paper, there are little loopholes. Berlusconi owns Fininvest who owns Milan... but before you can claim conflict of interest, you will notice that he doesn't own Il Giornale. He actually sold it to his brother in the nineties. We know that doesn't make a difference, especially with all the Pro-Berlusconi propoganda they spew during the elections. But legally, Silvio and his brother are independent people.
The only good thing I see is how quickly people in Italy are on to this sham. Inter fans were quick to quash these reports in online forums, and the rest of the Italian media was very careful not to spread false accusations.
Let's see what they come up with tomorrow. A lot has happened today and Milan's abuzz right now, so I expect a continuation of this story.
