Marotta: 'Closed doors only way to finish the season'
Inter general manager Beppe Marotta says playing behind closed doors is “the only way to finish the league” in the aftermath of the postponed Serie A fixtures.
Italian football has been thrown into chaos due to the rapid spread of the Coronavirus over the last several weeks, with over 2,000 confirmed cases of the disease throughout Italy. Matches have been postponed depending on the location of the home side, and this has led to in fighting amongst the teams in the league. A meeting was held today in Rome in order to resolve the fixture crisis. Inter’s general manager Marotta spoke after the conclusion of the meeting, and said balance needs to be restored.
“The right harmony was restored in a time of great difficulty for the country, we need to be aware of the very serious health problems in our sphere, within football,” Marotta told reporters outside the CONI headquarters.
“The attempt is to complete the championship with the utmost regularity, without creating a competitive imbalance,
but as you can see the scenario changes constantly.
“
We are waiting for a new government decree, so we can travel on sight.
Behind closed doors is the only way to finish the league in light of the situation and the restrictions that the government are rightly adopting.
“
The council ratified the proposal of the 20 clubs to resume suspended games, this is the solution of the Lega.
“There is one slot difference between the end of the week, with the suspended games, then the Lega will communicate the dates.
“Juve-Inter? It can be played on Sunday or Monday.” > Seems that Marotta - Agnelli 1-0 so far, they won`t get money OR fans in that filthy stadium.
What about scheduling Inter - Sampdoria first? A new date for Inter’s postponed match with Sampdoria was not discussed during this afternoon’s Lega Serie A council meeting according to a report from Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia.
It now appears that Inter will instead play their most recently postponed league fixture against Juventus this coming weekend and the Sassuolo match it is taking the place of will be played in mid-week in the middle of May.The report goes on to add that new dates for the Coppa Italia semi final second legs which were both postponed have not been discussed either.
