He could’ve easily disregarded VARs decision, couldn’t he? (i’m not sure about the exact cases in which the referee can choose to consult VAR and then make his own decision and when he is supposed to just do whatever VAR tells him to)

He obviously made the wrong call initially, I’m not arguing that.

Not in this case, it's a fact that players were inside penalty area before the shoot, so the ref could no ignore VAR call.
But if the foul was taken, he couldnt be disallowed feom VAR, so we would have been robbed of a valid goal, again.
