Cruz: Inter were denied success
Saturday 15 December, 2007
Julio Cruz claims Inter would have been all-conquering earlier had the Calciopoli situation not made it “impossible.”
The scandal in the summer of 2006 saw Juventus demoted with points penalties for Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina for allegedly attempting to influence referees.
“I have been at Inter for five years, but why have I only won something in the past couple of seasons? Everyone knows the reason now,” explained Il Jardinero.
“It was impossible to win before, but since there has been clarity in Italian football the hierarchy has been re-established. Do we feel more protected? I think the sport is more protected. We want to entertain the fans so they’ll come back to the stadiums.”
The season is not even at the halfway stage and already the Scudetto race seems to have been whittled down to just two clubs.
“I think Roma are our real rivals, you just need to look at their results over the last two years. They play good football and it is pleasing to see them win in Europe, as it gives more prestige to the League we’re playing in.”
Cruz had been linked with the Giallorossi and admits he gave it some serious thought.
“It’s true, in the past I had offers from Roma, but there were many obstacles. It doesn’t seem right to talk about it now, but playing alongside Francesco Totti would have been fantastic.”
That was when the former Bologna and Feyenoord star had slipped down the pecking order at San Siro, but with eight Serie A goals he seems to have finally shaken off that supersub tag.
“They used to say I was better if I came off the bench, but this season I am proving I can do pretty well from the start too. My objective is always to play for the team and score goals.”
However, this could represent one of his last campaigns at Inter and in Italy.
“I am thinking of playing another 18 months with Inter, then go back to Argentina. I have been away from my homeland for a long time and as the years stack up the nostalgia grows.”

Looks like we need a Cruz replacement after this and next season. Nonetheless, great words from Cruz.
