Estudiantes de La Plata midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron has been voted the best South American footballer of 2009 by leading Uruguayan newspaper El Pais.

It is the second time the Argentina international received this prestigious award as he also came out on top last year after leading his club to Copa Libertadores glory.

‘La Brujita’ won by a landslide margin ahead of Chilean striker Humberto Suazo and Ecuadorian midfielder Edison Mendez.

Chile boss Marcelo Bielsa won the gong for best South American tactician.

Wow, at the age of 34 for the second consecutive year S-A footballer of the year. I hope he will return to Italy for 1 or 2 years, that would be great.

Yeah, Estudiantes won against last-champion San Lorenzo 3-0, and Verón played his last home game. I think he will play the last round next week because Estudiantes right now reached the top of the table and is fighting for the championship.

He was my favourite midfielder of all time. Damn that Argentine generation around 2000 was the reason I fell in love with football. Batistuta, Simeone, Zanetti, and then Crespo, Veron.. damn those were fucking class. I just don't find football half as exciting anymore.

I thought Veron was good-ish 04/05, 05/06 was mediocre but acceptable.

Once Veron was gone, our attacking play became non existent and turned into kicking long balls to Zlatan or Adriano.

And that pretty much marked the end of our fancy small group attacking plays, until a certain Motta and Sneijder showed up.
